Need Help w/ Painting Decoys
« on: May 14, 2010, 07:51:51 AM »
Hey guys/gals,
Last year I bought around 5 dozen beat up decoys with intentions of repainting them. That time has come and I have no idea on how to go about it. Do I need to buy the painting kits from Cabela's or can I buy some kind of paint at the hardware store? Do I need to sand them down a little? Do I need to primer them? I will be painting mallards, buffleheads, wigeons, bluebills, redheads, gwt and probably some coots. Thanks everyone for the help.

It really depends on the shape the decoys are in now and how detailed you want to get. It may be that all they need is a good bath and some touching up. If they are beat to hell then I would say you spend the $$ to get the painting kits, sand them down and take your time painting them up nice. It may take a while longer but will be worth it in the end and very fulfilling when you drop birds over your own decoys.

i got the parkers paint kit from mpw and am using my airbrush to paint a bunch of my old decoys. works great so far. with exception that they dont give you a very good color for the mallard hen bill

I sold the ones I used last year and purchased new ones for this year, so I didn't have to worry about re-painting them.
