30-06 for hunting. The .308 is a good steady round for targets at a distance.

about 3-4" diffrance at 500 yards and 100-150 foot pounds muzzle-500 yards the 30-06 is a little better but i still like it better

Yes but I dont see how that makes any difference, niether of these cartridges should be used on game that far anyway.

Which is about 200-250 yards more than the average hunter should be worried about.

that's gonna start a fight.
should your 270 be used at those kind of ranges on game? if so, why?

I voted .308.  I'm getting old and I think a lighter weight rifle would be more fun to pack around.......and a .308 would be easier to get in a light rifle and it would kick less than the 30-06.

With todays bullets like Barnes and Nosler E-tip, you can get away with lighter bullets than in the past.  A 130 gr barnes TSX would be good medicine out of the .308 for deer and probably elk..... :twocents:

30-06, every time, hands down.  If they would have sold it in a youth model rifle, PathfinderJR would have gotten a 30-06 for his birthday instead of a .308

not a fight but a lesson :chuckle: both of those guns still have well over 1000 foot pounds at that range more then enough to take a yote deer and elk. i could look it back up but i am sure the 308 was 1350ish and the 1500ish like said MOST hunters should not shoot that far BUT some are capable. and lets not start another thread about to far and this and that. i was pointing out a fact, that is all.

and a lesson for 270shooter here is a lesson from my ballistic software.
270win 150grain bullet at 500 yards is 53" low when zeroed at 200 and 930 foot pounds :P
30-06spring 150 grain bullet 45" low and 1235 foot pounds

A DIFFRENCE OF 8" and 305 foot pounds the 270 loses :P

but my 270wsm would kick the crap out of both and 95% of the guns out there as far as drop

It's not fair to compare same weight bullets in differing calibers. Try 130 grain .277 versus 150 grain 30 caliber. Plus 8 inches at 500 yards is very little difference anyway.

BTW, what is "bi-est." ???
