Hunting the Lochsa
« on: May 20, 2010, 11:44:05 AM »
Anybody ever hunted it?  I'm sure the wolves have ruined this hunt, but thought i'd ask.  Any success?

Steep rugged country. The wolves have devistated the Lochsa elk herd. They have lost approx. 80% of the herd in that east central part of the state. Had friends that hunted it the year before the wolf season and had to have someone in camp at all times watching the horses. A pack would sit up on the hill above camp waiting for them to leave to get a crack at a big ole mule. They saw more wolf tracks than elk sign.

Pretty much sums it up right there.

I'm pretty sure the Lochsa is the Lolo herd which the wolves have devastated. Sadly, I would have to recommend any other elk area in Idaho as being better.

Have not hunted there yet. But hike and fly fish in the Lochsa area. Have noticed a big decline in the elk, moose and deer numbers the past 5 years.
On a positive note the west slope Cut fishing is still good

Sucks to hear that the wolves have devistated that herd. I know there used to be some great hunting in there.  We have a family ranch about an hour west of there and was kicking around the idea of hunting in there in the next couple years.
