Alkali mod fire rut tag
«
on:
May 18, 2007, 09:25:34 AM »
I don't have high hopes of getting drawn for the hunt I put in for this year, so I'm already looking towards next year's drawing, I capitulated and threw my points into a low probability hunt since I'm going to Montana. I got my access card for the YTC last year, but have not scouted yet. Anyone hunted this limited hunt? I plan to scout the area on some hikes this summer/ fall and put in for it successive years until I get drawn. I'd be appreciative of any info on specific areas, I have a general idea of the lay of the land, but not where the better areas are.
Thanks

I am putting in for that tag. My friend drew a late archery tag last year and we spent 8 days hunting deer. We saw deer everywhere . There are some nice bucks out there. Also we pre scouted it 2 months before chasing coyotes. Try area 10. Your ytc card expired march 31 and you will have to get a new one. Good luck on your draw. If you draw maybe we can hook up and I can show you around.

Dman....I might be able to help you out a little as well. I drew the elk tag in the unit a few years back. I spent a lot of time in there, and believe I still have all my maps of that area. I saw a coupla' dandy bucks in there as well. Wish I would've had the Deer tag instead of the Elk that year.

this buck was killed off of the firing center before it was a draw hunt. Sorry for the shadows...he had nice fronts but very week backs. A young 4 for sure!

Some good bucks have come off of their but I have heard that fog is a potential issue with this hunt.

Fog would definitely make it tougher in open country like that. Barring fog, it seems like a lot of glassing from hilltops would be the deal there. Not a lot of tree cover from what I can tell so far, just a ton of canyons.

Fog is an issue but......that's when it's time to walk the draws. It is easy to get carried away just glassing, and usually from your rig. A spotting scope and window mount is all you need. This can obviously be effective, but I personally saw more deer when the weather was crappy. I'm tellin' ya from first hand experience, when it's rainy or foggy or windy, whatever, parallel across those fingers you see and those deer will be bedded in those draws. Gaurenteed!

Perfect, I prefer to hike over glassing anyways. Really anxious to get out and start scouting the area. Looks as though the genetics there are pretty good from the YTC hunt archives. Thanks for the info.

My boy and I took two bucks side by side about 4 years ago. It was something. both were 3x4s Mine was 22" his was smaller, but had a very small 3rd antler growing on his head. We euro mounted that. Doing the meat hunt for a doe this next week with a smokepole.
