Older Marlin .22 Bolt Action Question....
« on: May 21, 2010, 03:32:34 PM »
At least 30yrs back.

.22 Short/Long/LongRifle
Bolt Action
Clip Fed
Blued/Wood stock

What would the model number be for one of these puppies? I distinctly recall them having the above features, having a tough time figuring out what model they were.

The Tube Feed (current) will shoot all three, the Youth "single shot" will shoot all three, but all the clip fed ones I see offered now are "Long Rifle" only.

It's a model 780 that was bolt/clip.  781 was bolt/tube.  782 was .22mag bolt/clip.  783 was .22mag bolt/tube.

So... now that I know it's a model 780.  The "next" series of the bolt/clip fed offered was the 880.  Anyone know whether the stocks are interchangable?  I know that eventually, Marlin changed the fire control group, but, I don't know whether that was with the 880 or the 980.

Another question... anyone know whether the 780 barrels are interchangable with the 880 model?

i bought a 782 right after high school and scoped w/ a nice little 2x7 and was runnin a couple hundered rounds a week through it, it killed everything it ever looked at. I made two of my the most memroble shots of my life w/ that little rifle and killed many many many diggers, and ground hogs w/ it. Then came a wife and kids and I couldnt afford to shoot it anymore so it was sold to pay bills. When finaces would allow I bought another and it never shot as well, sold it and bought a ruger which shoots better than the old marlin ever thought about but I have many fond memories of days spent afield w/ that marlin

From my digging on google... it would appear that mine is a model 780SQ (Squirrel) with a heavy barrel.  The remnants of the design carved into the pistol grip portion of the stock lends to it being a squirrel model. And, yes, the two models apparently can share barrels/stocks.

Numrich had what I need to give this poor ol' thing some TLC, although, (unfortunately) the "squirrel" barrel stock was not available.  So, a new stock, barrel, barrel retention pin, and front sight group have been ordered.  Due to the condition of the barrel before I got it... I'm just gonna swap barrels... even though it is a tack driver (as is).

These are a press fit barrel, but, I'm hoping that securing it into a padded vise and driving the retention pin out is all I'll need to remove/replace the barrel (ok, m'be a plastic faced dead-blow mallet too).  I'd also assume that a very thin coat of some anti-seize before installation of the barrel wouldn't be a bad idea?
