Cleaning carbon from old MilSurp barrels
« on: June 25, 2010, 11:12:15 AM »
Recently I tried to clean the bore on my Mosin Negant. It was pretty dirty. I understand that bits of carbon actually leach out of the metal over time, especially if the barrel is really old. There are expensive electro-chemical cleaners that do the job but I found a site that teaches you how to make your own electro-cemical carbon cleaning device for less than $50 dollars. I haven't tried it yet but the reviews are good. Take a look:

Complete rifle cleaning kit is about $8 at walmart, grab a bottle of copper solvent for a whopping $2-3 and you are ready to go.
The reason there are so many Ruger upgrades is because they're necessary.

Shaving cream is what we used in the service.  Those weapons had to be spotless before they went back in the arms room. Im talking white glove clean.

Shaving cream?  That's a new one....We used STP carburetor cleaner. The Armorers hated it..

Use some Barnes CR-10 Bore Solvent, it's the best bore cleaner you can buy.  :twocents:

I have the FO3 as well as most chemicals sold in te last 20 years. nothing beats the FO3 for effectiveness, but you have to be patient. and the target is the copper, not carbon. hoppes is as good a carbon cleaner as you will find. for copper, cr 10 and sweets are the bomb.
