Hound with a Bleached "S"???
« on: May 24, 2010, 09:37:25 AM »
My girlfriends co-worker just got a hound from the pound and it has a bleached "S" on one of it's ears.  Anyone ever seen or heard of this before?  I've seen people tatoo the inside of the ear or thigh of dogs but never seen or heard of someone bleaching a letter on a pup.

Curious,
Jake

It's called freeze branding and it's very popular within the hound hunting community. The dog most likely belongs to someone whos last name begins with "S". Probably out looking for his/her dog at every chance and doesn't even know the pound had the dog. :twocents:

Half the time some do-gooder sees a hound on a road and picks the dog up thinking they are doing good. They haul the dog out of the area back to the big city where they are from and the dog ownere was only a mile up the road trying to find his dog. This happens all the time, we used to tag out dogs with an extra brass tag that read "Please Leave Dog, We Will Find Him".

years ago someone lost a really gorgeous foxhound type dog she hung around the neighborhood we lived in then got knocked up by some stray it was a real bummer no one ever claimed her she was a beautiful hound.  No tags, no freeze marks no tats I checked her over and called all the local vets and forest service etc to see if anyone had been using hounds in the area, we tried to keep her in our yard it lasted 3 days and she escaped and went to live at one of the other neighbors all told she lived at various houses for about 6 months then disappeared  :dunno:

I will try to get a pic and post it.  The dog came from the pound here in Seattle.  Seems to be a young dog, maybe 2-3.

yeah bearpaw is right i am sure someone is missing there hound.most of the times when we used to run there was not enough radio col's to go around so we would put them on the older dogs and the pups just went without. someone probably found him hauled him out of the area like bearpaw said and now the guy is looking in the area that the dog should be when it is not.

Doing what they are trained to do.(running the road)

I've only picked up one.  The dog was in rough shape...ironically we were looking for Hornseekers pup and ran into this guys.  He had all the contact info on the collar, which I thought was brilliant.  he was a happy man when I contacted him and delivered his dog.  I think he even helped us look for Ernies dog for a day.

I'm betting Bearpaw is right.

Trying to get some info (pics and anything else they may know about the dog) but it probably wont be until tomorrow.  What I do know at this point:  They've actually had the dog for seven months, they got the dog from the pound (Seattle), and yes it was turned in by someone but they don't have any info about the person that turned it in.  The pound listed the dog as a hound x pointer mix.

It will be interesting to find out if this is a dog someone is missing.  How in the heck did it end up in a seattle city pound?

I'll see what else I can find out.

Well I have a german shepherd from the yakima pound that came to me via marysville  shelter dogs get moved around a lot I have had dogs shipped to me from as far away as arizona ;) rescue people think nothing of moving these dogs where ever they will have the best chance at a home.....city shelters are often in need of dogs and a few work with rural shelters that are typically loaded with dogs then there are the abundant private shelters and private pure breed rescues and breeder rescue foster networks. that is how an eastern wa hound easily could find its way to a seattle shelter ;)

See if the pound has any history on the dog...I wonder if it got turned in in Seattle or somewhere else and go ttransferred to Seattle...

Sounds like this one might have been "rescued" by at least someone who cares.

Interesting, I didn't know dogs got moved around like that but it certainly makes sense.  Hopefully I can get some more info soon.

Couple bits of info I forgot to post...

The hound owner normally has a brass tag on the collar with name and phone. There are a couple reasons the dog may not have had a collar with ID tag, but most knowledgeable doggers have a brass tag on every dog. Could have easily been a newcomer to the sport, or another possibility, hounds do make good pets, could be just a pet dog from within the city that someone got from a hounder. But most likely someone who owns hounds owned this dog at one point or it wouldn't have a freeze brand. :twocents:
