fishing and scouting birds - salt water
«

I'm hoping to spend at least one day on the salt this 3day weekend. Any recommendations on a good fishing area where I can scout a bit for sea ducks? I was thinking up around the whidbey area. Thinking about chasing Lings but haven't decided. i can do that closer to home, but I haven't seen many ducks in the pt defiance area (although I've heard rumors of some).
I'm fishing out of a 20ft open bow, so I can only go so far safely.

Seems like most of the sea ducks are off in their breeding areas and would not be the same as fall and winter locations.
I saw a pair of harlequins fly be me off the south ends of Lopez on the prawn opener. There seem to be a few scoters around, but not many and I have never seen an oldsquaw in the spring or summer.
Good luck with the lings, hint: they bite best when the current is moving rather than at slack.

yeah I know the birds move around quite a bit, I'm just trying to get aquainted with the area. learn the water, bays, shorelines, find some new boat launches, etc. and make it double worthwhile by dropping a line at the same time.
