My next build will be the 6.5 Grendel as it has much better long range and down range efficiency over the 6.8 round. The main problem with the 68 is the longer casing which prohibits the use of long bullets in the AR15 magazine. The Grendel uses a much shorter case and therefore allows the use of a much greater BC available with 120ish grain 6.5 bullets.
I'm not knocking the 6.8, I have two, and have built several, I just killed 2 coyotes the other day with one, but still there is no question of the long range superiority of the 6.5 bullets. It all depends on what your game is I suppose. I can shoot out to 600 yards in my back yard any day all day and I laugh when I read that someone is shooting at deer sized game with a 6.8 at 600 yards, well, it just ain't there guys. The case can't hold enough powder to reliably and consistently kill deer at those distances, I certainly doubt the 6.5 Grendel can do it either.
The Grendel makes a very fine hunting cartridge it is just as good in the field as the 6.8 and much better on the bench. We have found the 6.8 SPC to be very effective on coyotes out to 300 yards using the 110 VMax bullets, I'm not convinced I would shoot at a large buck at that distance however. Maybe with the new Barnes
bullets it would be adequate though, I have yet to test them.
