Cascara trees

I found a fairly large stand of cascara trees that look like the bears have torn up.Most the trees have broken branches our have been pulled to the ground and are growing sideways.Reading education of a bear hunter I know that Ralph Flowers liked to hunt cascara but haven't found much info other than that.I have a few questions for anybody who has hunted over cascara.Is this cascara or another tree?Any advantage to hunting cascara over other food sources?I have a decent looking spot for huckleberry's and blackberry's, are bears attracted to one more than the others?Is the timing of when they are ripe different?The area is thick,if I hear a bear would I be better of sitting and waiting or try calling him out?Thanks in advance I'm really trying to maximize my time spent in the woods this year.

I can't see the pics since they are so large and taking forever to load.

But if they are Cascara then I would definately be watching over it come September. Sometimes they ripen in August, but usually later. Huck and black berries ripen a bit earlier so there can be a transition, but often they overlap in time and space so you can watch over huck in a cascara field.

I would sit and wait one out if possible, or use some light fawn bawls depending on how far away it was. You don't want to blow it out.

Not 100% sure.Should the bark taste bitter?Should I make sure to pack in extra tiolet paper

its hard to say if that is cascara or not, but I have found evedince of bear in them before, it looked like the same damage, other than the ones I saw were fresh and I could see the claw marks and hair on the broken branches

Bitter... and explosive diarrhea soon to follow i use to peel that stuff like crazy when i was younger. it sucked when i forgot to wash my hands afterwards. lol. they ripen in September and the bears love them... just glass an area and look for a tree that's getting the *censored* shook out of it.

from what I have heard is the bark from as Cascara tree "AKA chit'm bark" is a natural laxative, I worked with a guy who said when he was younger he use to peel the bark from Cascara tree's and then sell it to some one who made laxatives from it, and I think they would dry the bark before selling.

there are peeled cascara trees all over the capitol forest at the ends of all kinds of old roads it was a little weird to see at first but like brush picking there is a market for it
