Alkali Elk
« on: May 25, 2010, 07:07:48 PM »
Anybody know what the Elk situation is like on the Alkali unit? I was looking at possibly putting in for an antlerless or bull archery tag

thanks

Few and far between.  Alkaki is YTC: 500 square miles of sagebrush.  A few elk wonder on and off the range, but there are very few resident elk.

Hunter success in 2009 was 13%.

You have to pay a fee to register, then log in and out each day. You may have to put in a lot of days/miles to actually see an elk.

My hunting partners and I hunted for deer in the alkali two years in a row, we saw 3 bulls the whole time and no cows. I woudn't waste my points for elk in that unit.

The elk wonder on and off the Training center from the south by silver dollar cafe, the north from Reygrass area and from the east Hanford reach area. They are very few and far between.

Yes, the numbers are way down, but my buddy shot a 354" 7X9 a couple years ago, so the trophy potential is there.  I go in there all the time and shoot coyotes.  Lots of big bucks in there, but hard to hunt when you have to check in and out every day.

I'm not sure I agree that the elk are terribly tough to hunt.  Perhaps it has changed in the last few years.  I'm AHE and have hunted it a total of 2 days, so I may not have the most knowledge.  However, the elk appeared to be localized (not evenly distributed).  That said, in those 2 days I saw 30ish elk and killed a cow.  If you look at the harvest reports, they do kill some big bulls there.
