group hunt for rams
« on: May 25, 2010, 10:40:33 PM »
Just wondering has any one  ever drawed a group tag for sheep? I have been putting in for sheep with a buddy for 6 years now and just wondering if it is better to put in individually or just stay at what we have been doing? Like to here any input that any one has.

Individually would be better.

I agree with Bigshooter. Why would you want to decrease your odds on a permit that is already almost an impossible draw? With two applications in the pool instead of just one, the odds are twice as good that one of you are going to draw. You just need a partner who is willing to help you out on your hunt if he doesn't also have a tag.

Way better odds alone.

Over the last 8-10 years I've known of partners being drawn three different times for bighorn tags in WA. Clemens, Umtanum/ Selah Butte and Clemens I think. One husband and wife, one dad and son, and one hunting partner team if I can remember correctly.

Sure, it can happen. Odds are already so low I guess they can't get much worse. So if you only want to hunt if there's two people with tags, then do it that way. Otherwise if you want to increase your odds slightly, then apply individually.

I guess the way I look at it...the hunts with very few tags such as goat or sheep, if you get drawn but you have a buddy, and there is only one tag left....guess what.  Back in the hat you go.  Granted, if your buddy draws and there are two tags, then you get to hunt.  I also like to look at it as savoring the hunt.  I can't imagine Idabooner and I killing two moose on the same trip.   Why not spread it out over a year or two.

:yeah:   I would want to have as much time as possible to concentrate on getting one good animal, instead of trying to get the first one out of the way in a hurry, to be sure we get the second animal.

Odds are much worse and here is why: not only do you have just one name in the hat versus many, if your group name is drawn and there are not enough permits left to satisfy everyone in the group, the application is rejected.  If you apply for a hunt with two permits and you have a party of three you would never get drawn.  If you apply as a group of two you would have to be the first one drawn.

there's 8 out of 15 hunts that only have either 1 or 2 tags...the odds of getting 2 tags out of the same unit at the right time to draw as a group have got to be horrible...
