Battled warriors
« on: May 28, 2010, 03:19:22 AM »
This is better than any Boone score as far as I am concerned.  There is plenty of room for discussion and arguement and opinion when it comes to bucks past their prime........recessed buck.  What won't be argued is their status as being a real trophy in this state.
Sorry for the pic quality.  It was early morning and he was a long ways away.

How can you tell they are going 'recessed'? Just body size and the way of the antler growth?

In my minds eye, shooting an old buck is more of a challenge and I definitely consider them a trophy, like you said, especially in this state. I missed a buck like that archery hunting a few years back, 4x4 with eyeguards. Recessed but VERY heavy. His face was almost completely grey and white and very large bodied. But age and wisdom were on his side. As he walked up the trail towards the bottleneck I was sitting on he hesitated and took the more difficult route up the hill to avoid the bottleneck forcing me to take a 30 yard shot instead of a 15 yard shot, which I missed. I'd like to have that one back...
I hunt, therefore I am.... I fish, therefore I lie.

no doubt.....

Usually massive, shorter beams that just seem to stop(main beams dwindle).  Usually mossy beams, sometimes lots of burrs or multiple eyeguards even.   Shorter points, added with body shape, size but not necessarily fille d out.  Their cape.
