What is the best ...

What's the best way to prepare Smelt. I have read a few post on them but have no idea on the best way to fix.

Here is what I have heard.

Pinch the head off and pull the majority of the guts out then scrape the blood line out and rinse, then just put in the smoker till they are done to your liking. Everyone is different so your taste will be different then mine.

Those little buggers are oily so it would take allot to over do them, just use a lower heat and smoke till you like them !!

Two snips from the scissors, first one insert up the anus all the way to the gills and snip. Push your thumb up and forward to remove bloodline. Second one off with the head. You can do hundreds in just minutes this way.
Spray with garlic olive oil and season with Johny's seasoning salt then drop in a hot fry pan until a little crunchy, pull them off the heat and eat them like jerky...yum.

soak them in Garlic and anchovy oil.  Thread onto  a 8/0 barbless hook.  Cast and hang on.  OH you were going to eat them :)

4/0 Gamikatsu tied with a 24" 50# Dacron leader. Thread through the mouth and out the anus, pulling the line until the eye of the hook is in the throat of the smelt and the rest of the hook is hanging out the mouth. Wrap 3 or 4 half hitches around the body, attach to the main line with a heavy swivel. Cast with 12-16oz pyramid sinker, depending on the current, into desired hole and place rod in rod holder. Go to cooler, grab one or several of your favorite beverage and wait. :chuckle:

Roll them in flour then fry them up in butter.
