There is a guy at the gunshow that does a Cerakote on firearms.  Any feedback?

There is a guy at the gunshow that does a Cerakote on firearms.  Any feedback?

A buddy had his SPR clone done up in it.  He had to take it back because it apparently came off around the gas block after firing a few rounds.  I'm sure it was an isolated incident, and a matter of piss-poor prep work.  The guy fixed it for free of course, my buddy ended up selling the gun (for a $hitload!).  I think this was back when the idea was getting popular, it could have been the smitty's first time doing it.

I saw it a couple times, it was okay I guess, just looked and felt like a good, dark parkerizing job.  I personally don't really understand why one would think to use ceramic on a gun, but I imagine it would handle heat.

Have you checked out Duracoat?  I think that's a great finish.  They have endless colors, you can put it on nearly any surface, and it makes your gun really easy to maintain.  If you can spray paint, you can do it yourself.  If not, you'll have to pay or find a friend.  I bought their "kit" and did one rifle, an AKS-74 build.  I actually blasted, parkedrized, THEN Duracoated, but that is not necessary.  this

All metal except the folder were finished, perfect match.  I made the mistake of finishing the bolt, lugs and all  :bdid:  I have put roughly 600 rounds since then, and it STILL sticks a little.  That finish is on there.  (I gotta go stone that off)

If you like the parkerized feel, and don't mind the color this is by far the easiest way to do it.  Trouble is you need access to a blast cabinet and a steel tank to hold the solution.  After prep work, you throw it in and stand there smoking cigarettes for 20 mins.

This may all seem like a bit much, but I don't know what kind of tools/skill you have so just my  :twocents:

My Lyman GPR .54 has Cerakote in a brown finish.  I like it.  It also had the bore done with MicroSlick.  Seems to clean easily with a swab, soap, and hot water.  Bought it off Gun Broker that a way.
