March's theme...SHED ANTLERS

If you and Miles are shed hunting than bring your snow shoes. I got off work early and wanted to go call a bobcat area.  I postholed through 2' to 4' feet of snow for about half a mile before I gave up and called a lower elevation.  The thaw has made it so you are busting through the crust.  Last weekend you could mostly stay on top.

This guy is starting to "shed" his winter coat.  Does it count?  These hats really do produce.

"this is the worst showing (amount of entries) of any of our POM contests.  What gives?"

You have to look at it by the numbers Bone, when the mods decided to put themes behind each month, they in affect reduced the size of the pool by eliminating large groups of posters that don't participate in said topic. Then brake it down even further, out of the members that actually do participate in each months topic, shed hunting for instance, how many of them actually post pics anyway? I'm not complaining, its not my site so I go along with whatever Huntwa decides, but putting themes behind each month actually does eliminate the amount of participants you have.

I got to disagree though Phool.  This months theme is pretty specific...although I like the idea in general.  I myself had a hard time deciding what to post in the past months with no theme.  Do I put a pretty sunset/tree photo that is a great photo in, but up against a 6x6 elk like M-Rays a photo like that doesn't stand a chance.  The issue comes down to great technical photos or great subjects.  This site is geared towards great subject photos.  It will always be the best big game animal kill shot that wins.  Some months will be bigger than others and they have some "anything goes" months sprinkled in there.  It just so happens that this months theme is very specialized and that keeps a lot of people out of this month.  I don't think it's necessarily bad though...  The themes give people a chance to win and levels the competition within the entries that month.

I agree with most of that Pope, like I said I'm not complaining, just trying to explain to Bone why there are few pics. We have about 1000 members, of those 1000 how many post pics of any kind? Not many. Of those 1000, how many actually go out and shed hunt? Even less. What we are left with is only a handful of people that will actually have gone shed hunting, and even fewer that will find one and post it, leading to questions like Bones. I would be very surprised if there are 20 members on here that have gone out shed hunting this year, found one and took a pic of it.

There were a couple of us who wanted themes of some sort, whether seasonal or monthly. While some themes may limit the amount of entries I think it makes the contest more interesting. Maybe some themes will get more people to post pictures or even get them into photography.

My wife was looking over my shoulder at this topic and said " we should submit our shed antlers". After I quit laughing and got back on the bar stool, I thought I would submit our " shed antlers ", apparently she thought all you guys put your antlers up on your sheds also. I explained to her about real sheds. :chuckle: Antlers are 2007.

Its been a tough frickin year.  I think I am at shed 15 instead of 50 by this time.  My wife wants me on anti-dreppresion meds, and I am about to accept.  To top it all off , it costs me about a $100 to go look everytime.
