Mauser Help
« on: June 13, 2010, 09:19:42 AM »
I have a spanish mauser (Fabrica De Armas Oviedo) that i'm looking to replace the trigger on. I've found several that are very affordable but i'm not sure which one i need. Is it based on a model 98? Is it a "large ring" or "small ring"? It was sporterized long before i got it so i'm not sure what configuration it started life as. Has anyone on here got experience with these rifles or done this trigger job before?

I am not an expert, but I like the old mausers and have looked at a lot of info.  I also own a 1893 spanish mauser.  I would say it is a small ring, especially if it cocks on close.  If you can see a third locking lug on the rear of the bolt it would be based on the M98 action.  The model 93's have just the two lugs at the front and all the advice is to load the rounds with moderate pressures.  I got a trigger installed that converts to a cock on open from Brownell's and had a good gunsmith install it.  I guess the triggers from Thimney are easier to install.

Yes it does cock on close and the saftey is on the back of the bolt and says Mark II. When they say small ring what are they referring too?

The ring is the area where the barrel threads into the receiver.  Most mausers pre M98 are small ring (1.30 in. dia.), the large ring is 1.41 in. dia.  So that is why mauser add-on products such as stocks, barrels and scope bases are specific with the M93,95,96 and the M98.

I have an M-95 Spanish, rechambered for 300 sav.
I need a new bolt if anyone has any info.

You can tell the difference in models by the measurement of the action screws in the stock.
There is a Mauser website that lists the measurements, I will try to find it.
Larger span was m98,large ring, smaller-small ring.
It's not true that I am good for nothing---I can be used as a bad example!!
