buckshot for coyotes
« on: June 16, 2010, 05:33:16 PM »
I was wondering if any of you use buckshot for shooting coyotes??? If so what size buck shot do you use??? Also what type of choke would you use in a 3inch 870?

I use 00 when calling during bear season just in case I get a bear or cougar to come to the call.  I dont want to have BB or No. 4 buck and not get to shoot.  I want to try using No 1 or 0 but I cant find it anywhere.  My gun patterned better at 40 yards with a modified choke than the extra full choke I had.  I think it was just to tight for the larger buckshot.   :dunno:

I've used BB shot and it works good. The biggest I would go is #4 buck. 00 Buck is for deer. You won't be able to shoot much past 40 yards. Unless you use that "Dead Coyote." I believe they claim it's good out to 70 yards but you'd definitely want to pattern it in your gun to be sure.

:chuckle: i will have to let you shoot my browing bobcat then you might cange your mind. i don't like bb's because they don't have the knock down power like lead. i have killed a few with them but will always shoot lead over steel.

:)try "Hevi-shot dead coyote" I like number 1 and 4 buck shot too, depends on where you are. Dead Coyote at 40-50 yards at night, with a light, kicks ass.

I have smoked several with 00 buck out to 60 yards for quite a few years.  But now I love the Hevi-shot Dead Coyote.

Steel???  Did I say steel? I sure wouldn't use steel shot for coyotes either. I use lead BB's.

BB's pattern a whole lot better than #4 buck, I guarantee that. You don't see them in stores much, but Cabelas has them, and lately they've been selling them dirt cheap. I bought two boxes of 25, should last me many years. Check these out:

Compare to the price of Dead Coyote shells.   :o

Dead Coyote's are about $3.50 per shell, these are 50 cents per shell.

I have shot several w/ #4 buck and a turkey choke outta my 870. it tips 'em right over. I tired #2s but didnt have good success i think due to poor patterning.
