If you're hunting Alkali, you will be hunting the Yakima Training Center.

It is per person per year which usually expires end of march. You have to go in during certain hours and watch a video and fill out the papers. Then you have to check in twice(main gate & range control) and out each day.
$25 is reasonable considering but some are unaware. They enforce the rules pretty strictly, sticklers for detail.

Make sure you have proof of insurance for your rig... You also have to register your weapons at the gate and can only use ones that are on record with them.

Yeah they own you once through the gate. Required to have orange on person, not just in the truck, they enforce the speed limit even in the outback with radar, don't ask how I know.
They have tracked us in the snow even searched the entire truck and paperwork/licenses/guns to the letter. Nothing rude, maybe they didn't have anything else that day. We have heard of several others being searched.
One guy got caught outside his declared units and got hauled in for hours of interrogation. Told me he was crying before they let him go.
Once I reported some cattle in a neighboring unit, so they questioned me. Just because I used the binos to look at something odd.

Start here:
http://www.lewis.army.mil/yakima/sites/mwr/recreation.asp

You must go through an orientation which includes watching a video.  The card costs $25 and is good until March 31 of the following year.  You must check in and out each day.  You must enter and exit via the main gate at Selah.  You cannot enter before 2 hours before sunrise, and must be out 2 hours after sunset.  There are 16 training areas.  Some or all may be closed at any time.  The open and closed training areas can change daily.  You can call at 17:00 the day before and find out what will be open the next day.  When you check into range control you can request access to three different training areas.  If you wish to go to a different training area, you must go back to range control and switch them.

All weapons must be registered in advance.  Concealed carry does not apply on YTC; don't even try it.  All weapons must be cased when travelling in a vehicle.  Vehicle registration and proof of insurance is required.

Lots of red tape, but it is a military base.  My advice is go over now, get your card and map, and get familiar with the center.  It's huge: about 500 square miles.

There are elk, but they are sparse.   Get to know some of the base personnel during your scouting trips and they might be able to give you some tips.

I've been in there quite a bit coyote hunting.  The only problem is they may not even let you hunt at all because they might shut it down.  The other problem is they close parts of the area every day and you don't know which part until you go check it.  My buddy shot a 354" bull out of there a few years ago with a rifle, so there is potential.  The most elk I see are in the northwest corner of the center.  They come out of the fields down below and migrate into the center.  Elk isn't a great hunt because the numbers are so low, but the deer is worth it.  I have seen more than three 180" bucks in there.  Good luck and bring extra tires the roads are rough and lots of tires pop (At least three extra).

Funny.  I've killed elk on YTC, have seen large deer, and got a flat tire once. Had a tank stop and some Army soldiers helped me change it!

I drew the Modern tag for bulls in this area. Here is the web site for the YTC. http://www.lewis.army.mil/yakima/sites/local/
Sounds like we have some hoops to jump thru but it should be worth it.

I also got drawn for antlerless elk in the Taneum, a northeast whitetail doe, and a second doe in the desert unit.

We hunt yotes there all the time,We dont see alot of elk,but we see huge bucks. The elk I have seen seem to be close to the river.(Columbia). The MPs are all cool and probly wont even stop you,I hope this helps but in all seriousness the elk are hard to find just stick to the water and head South East after you go in the gate..Good luck, One more thing take 2 bags of chocolate chip cookies to the guys at the gate every mourning trust me it makes it alot easyer to pass the check point. :)

have harvest data from there from 2003-2007 but only 03-04 for elk 86 elk taken those combined years with 60 of them coming from either TA1 or TA2 44 of 86 were bulls 03 seemed to also be the better year for large bulls

AND  don't take anyting off of the TC.  A buddie picked up what he thought was petrified wood  - ended up being arrested for having artifacts.  Cost him over 10 grand in leagal fees and still ended up being convicted.  Cost him 80 hours of community service.  DON'T step one foot out side of the rules.

Other than that have a good time!
