Neither is "better" for deer. They're ballistically pretty close and a deer will never know the difference.

the cartridges are ringers performance wise..but the 7-08 is a short action cartridge..while the .270 is a long action..so maybe a bit lighter rifle in the 7-08.

Depends on  whether or not you want a long or short action rifle. Also depends on how much you want to spend on ammo, the 7mm-08 is slightly more expensive. As far as performance, very similar.

I have always had a .270.  I have an ancient Winchester model 70 that was one of my first rifles, and also a Tikka T3 which is incredible accurate and easy to lug around.  I don't use it for everything anymore but would not hesitate to do so as it has been one of the great hunting rounds.  I haven't used the 7mm-08 but am sure it is fine, but different ballistics.  Compare the ballistics, the model of gun you want it in, and go with what you want.  Have fun!

i have 2 7mm-08 and 2 270 and a 270 wsm :chuckle: so hard to choose the 7mm-08 has more bullet choices you can go from likw 100-110 grain bullet all the way to 175 grain bullet both are good round the 270 i would pick if i m looking at shots 200+ all the time but if i was not going to shoot over about 225-250 7mm-08 at bi mart the fctory ammo is very close maybe 2.00 difference higer for the 7mm-08 but i hand load everything. so just depends

I had the same dilemma about 12 years ago and I chose the 270. A couple of reasons: one was the cheaper and more availability of ammo the other was the the rifle I decided on was the Browning A Bolt and in the 270 it was already more than light enough for me. If it was a different rifle that was a little heavier, I may have chosen the 7/08 instead because a short action is generally about 1/4 pound lighter. Ballistic wise, as others have said, there isn't a lot of difference. Although the 270 is slightly flatter shooting.

why wouldnt you shoot over 250 with it the remington ballistics calculator says with a 140 grain accu tip at 500 yards the energy is 1225 ft-lbs that should be plenty for a deer

7/08 should be good to 400 yards for deer. 500 yards is really stretching it's capabilities I would say, but I'd say the same about the 270 Win.

Go with a .270 WSM better than both. Check Ballistics.

i have plenty of other guns i can shoot that far with and it is personal choice that is why i said what i said. if i want to shoot over 250 i would prefer my 270 win if it is over about 400 i want my 300 win mag if it is over 600 yards i want my 50bmg juts my choice never did i say or would i say that the 7mm-08 does not have enough energy to take a deer past 250 just my choice that is all.

and yes jayrod9528 is the the wsm kicks the crap out of both having all 3 i know :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:

"Better" is a subjective term. Ammo is more expensive and recoil is more. That's not better, IMO. But I agree it's a very good cartridge.
