that's a good tag, fun unit to hunt.  Here is one of the little guys that was coming in to one of our trailcams last year somewhere in the observatory unit.

I got drawn for the 340 342 quality bull, So I will be going in just after the archery season. I'm not sure how the whole hunting in the rut thing is going to go. So if you archery boys could maybe give me some tips it would be greatly appreciated.
I hunt for peace of mind.

congrats on the tag....last time i hunted there was 3 years ago when i drew an any bull tag for archery season.  called in a couple and saw a decent 5 point and killed a small 6 pt that someone had arrowed the previous year in the neck.  not a monster but still cool with a bow.  was able to drag it out whole as it died about 200 yards off the road.  we hunted above buck meadows and saw an awful lot of elk that trip and someone in our party also killed a cow up there.  nice place to hunt as we were always into elk.  also saw a lot of nice 3 and 4 point mulies but couldn't get close enough for a shot

Would any of you guys be willing to share some info on where to look for a cow? My 62 year old dad has drawn a muzzeloader cow tag for unit 340. We are not familiar with this unit. We have hunted the Colockum for 40 years but it isnt worth going up there any more. We arnt asking for honey holes just interested in some starting points that we can unload our quads or bikes and start scouting in September.
Thankyou for any advice
Keith

Most of that unit, quads are not allowed on the roads. Bikes are, but they need to be street legal.
One shot, one Deer. Two shots, maybe one Deer. Three shots, no Deer

In Sept,  keep your quads on your rig!  Bow hunters would appreciate that!  Use them where they are legal and no issues.  Just sucks to have a nice elk walking towards you 3 miles behind a gated road and have some yahoo come screaming up on a quad.  Even though the signs are posted no motorized vehicles..... not saying you would do that tho,  just that it seems to happen a lot over in those units.

 :yeah:
Hunted Observatory last archery season and it sounded like I was at a dirt bike rally.  Seems like nobody walks or uses mountain bikes anymore!
