why is the tube so short?  is that model made for a short action?

 Update on this, I did finally get a mount set up for my model 111 Savage. Note, anyone thinking about buying this model, you do need a modified ring similar to what Jackelope posted, a one piece base won't work on the model 111 as it does block the chamber exit.

Here's a picture of a one piece base on a Savage, note the cut out for loading the magezine.  This is a Weaver, B-quare makes one with multiple cross slots.



Here's a picture of a set of DNZ on a savage note how the rings are at the front edge and rear edge of the reciever bridges instead of cernterred over them.

All bolt action rifles will eject sideways so the brass TYPICALLY does not hit the scope.  Most rifle companies will make sure if one uses a one piece base the gun will function correctly. 

Sometimes when mounting scopes (and I mount about 20 per week and more as hunting season comes up) I have to mount the bases on backwards so there is less distance between each other.  Even on short tubed scopes we can make Leupold two piece bases and rings work, like I said, just mount them backwards, front still goes on front, and rear still to rear, but backwards.

Some manufactures such as Redfield, sometimes Simmons, and a few other will make shorter tubes for making YOU think that you have better field of view (FOV) and better light transmission.  Well I have noticed that you get worse or the same light transmission than with longer tubes, and the FOV is in fact better BUT out outside edges of the Scope is not clear.  So, you typically get a scope where the area the you can see clearly is actually a smaller area and in my mind give you a smaller FOV.  If that makes since to you all.

the bases are different front to rear on that savage so I'm not sure how that'd work. In other words you can't switch them front to rear.

I'm not saying change the front to rear.  I'm saying put them on backwards.  On Leupold bases, the notch to sit your ring inside of is not center on the rear base, its towards the back of the rear base, the front base is center.  Keep the front mount on the front and the rear mount on the rear.  But with the rear mount, the side that should be facing the back now faces the front.  So now instead of the notches for your rings being as far away as thy can from one another are now as close to one another as they can be.  Or you can just get a one piece base. 

Again I do prefer Leupold bases and rings, and its notched to give more room for the cartridge to eject...but not sure if the one piece come in a lefty model?    Another reason I like there bases and rings is they somewhat act as a quick detach.  I do however prefer Nikon scopes!!

 My understanding from the gentleman at Bear Arms was that they don't make a pre-drilled one piece base for this model Savage, though I do like the idea of a one piece base, from what you said ejection into the scope is not an issue. I had extensions on my last rifle, raising the scope up a bit for more clearance at the recommendation of Welcher's. At any rate I'll post a pic of the setup I ended up with next week. Thanks for the info.

 It is a really good scope though. Best I've owned, night and day brightness comparison to my Nikon and I really like my Nikon.
