Best hunt I've ever been on.  Make sure you go along just for the experience.  Bear

Keep in mind it might not be as good of a hunt as it used to be, since it will be open to general archery hunting.

Correct, but this will be the first year the archers will be in there before the permit hunt and push the elk around.

You don't understand. Little Naches has not had a general archery season until this year. They also changed Nile and Bumping GMU's to spike only this year. It was previously open for spike and antlerless elk. So you're going to have about 2000 hunters in the Little Naches this year, for 2 weeks in September, just before your permit hunt. In previous years there would have only been about 100 archery hunters in the Little Naches in September, because they had around 100 special permit hunts for any bull. Now you've got most of the people who previously hunted Nile and Bumping, that will be moving over into the Little Naches. Plus others who want to hunt it just because it has never been open for early archery season before. Actually I wouldn't be surprised if the number of archery hunters in there this September is closer to the 3000 mark.   :o

I had this permit in 1998.  I didn't have much time to hunt so I decided to take the first legal bull I saw.  I shot a 4x4 during the first fifteen minutes of the day, only to have a 6x6 come running out of the timber.  It was the best meat, but I wished I could have held out for the older bull.  My next permit was in 2006 for the Teanaway and I got a 7x8, so I have healed.
The scouting should be just for the lay of the land, cause summer bulls are different than rutting bulls.  I wouldn't worry about the archery hunters who are in there before you.  The elk have learned to live with all the jeepers, motorcycles and weekend target shooters.  I think if your brother puts in some effort and time he'll have a chance at at least a 290-320 bull.  Any of the drainages will probably have a herd with a mature bull and satellites.
This permit is the one I really want every year, but no luck since '98.

lots of big bulls in that unit.  We found a 380 type bull last season that I know nobody got, so he'll be back in the same area..

so your saying there were 3 THOUSAND bow hunters hunting the bumping/nile.......christ you guys crack me up, there wont be enough pressure from bow hunters in that unit to make a bit of difference to the rifle hunters......those elk put up with off road vehicles /campers / elk callers in the fall , even before a official bow hunt.......there are very few who are gonna hit the brush and actually move elk around......even in the manastash unit where it looks like military operations during bow season, you can still go up right after the season closes and find some nice bulls if you put a little effort in to it.

No, there was 2000 hunters in the Nile and Bumping units last year. Look it up in the harvest report. That's what I did.

One thing I found over the years hunting the wilderness ares in those units is the bulls are very call-a-bull in the high country. 5000 ft. When we would come out the hunters that hunted the low country hardly heard a bugle.  ;)

Nice, Bear!  Good job - I've been up in that area a few times but always using boot leather.

There are alwAys going to lot of hunters most anywhere there is a large elk population. But I've always felt thAt the people who put in the work are the successful hunters. What do they say, 80% of animals are harvested by 20% of hunters.  ;)
Push the envelope of your abilities, but respect the life of the quarry
