We drew it the year before it went to a rut hunt. I believe 5 years ago. I'm not sure when it was an open unit. It was a 1 in 4 draw odd then. We mainly hunted the West end. The quality was great, but they were in summer mode. It was interesting seeing game trails 2 feet under water in the ponds. We flew the unit which I would recommend to anyone that draws it. Those deer have everything they need, plenty of food water and cover.

I spent several days in that unit (public land) last year and it will not be on my choices for permits this year. I've seen big deer taken from there but they are mostly from private land or from a few years back when there weren't rag horns running everywhere. The quantity of deer is great, but the quality is not so good. Just my .02.

I think it will still be my number 1 choice, think i have 9 points now.  My uncle and his friend drew it a few years ago, my uncle shot a 25" 4 point, nice buck, nothing huge though, his friend shot a small one.  They didn't hunt hard though, i think they thought they were going to be seeing 27-30" bucks running around all over.

160"+ deer are taken in all of those hunts every year.  The hunts with the most apps are better for the most part...

I know two guys who drew that tag and were both successful.  My son's grandad on his mom's side drew it with his hunting partner first year with one point.  Talk about luck.  He told me they saw some huge deer that they just couldn't pull it together.  His partner shot one right at the 30 inch mark and scored in the 180s and he held out till last day and shot a old mature buck that needed to be taken out of the herd.  I only have a picture of his buck.  here ya go!

I have only ever heard a few good things about the unit and that was from a guy that has lived up there his whole life. He knew the unit by the back of his hand. I think the key to that hunt is a lot of time if you want a big one. With all of that said I have never seen a pic of a buck that I would consider waiting 8 to 10 years or more to get that tag. I hope that someone can prove me wrong. coasthunter pick a couple of units and check them out. Put in for the ones that you like the most.

You guys are making me second guess the desert unit now. I have 11 points and thats always my first choice, ive see some good ones come out there. I may have to rethink.

One has to take into consideration the winter survival of deer this year. Maybe more so in the North Eastern part of the state. Will see if spring surveys affect permit numbers.
The only man who never makes a mistake, is the man who never does anything!!
The further one goes into the wilderness, the greater the attraction of its lonely freedom.
