Advice on New Canon... 40 D vs 7 D

Buying a new camera, mostly gonna be taking pics of kids during sports.  A friend recommended the 40D for football because of low light capabilities.  My wife suggested the 7D because it is newer and read an add for it....  I would love to take some deer and elk pics since i burned all of my points last year for deer and elk.  Any suggestions would be helpful.  I am also looking to maybe take a class with the new camera to better use it.  My girl just made a 9-10 allstar team so I am looking to pull the trigger soon.

In all reality, you want to spend money on lenses not so much the camera unless you have a ton of cash to burn. You can get just as good of pictures with a nice used 20d or 30d for 300 -400 bucks with a expensize L series lense. I bought a 30d with a 28-135 Is for $600.00 but want to upgrade and get a good lense for wildlife shots. Im wanting to eventually get a 100-400 L series lense (about 1100-1200 used $1600+ new) and thats not even a real good lense. A real good lense will run in that 5-6000 dollar range for wildlife. Ask Bone about his. I will send you a link to some real good info on lense selection......oh and it wont be long and your bull will be done

Well, between the two models you mentioned, I would go with the 7D because it's newer.  It's an upgrade from 40D/50D with HD video capability.  But if you want to get some good L lenses, then just pick one of the 20D/30D/40D/50D depending on your budget.  I'm leaning toward what bucklucky said.  I still shoot a 20D and it has been good.

yeah i saw a add for a new 50 d with 3 different lenses for @ 1700.00 maybe that would be a better 1st step.

You would be much better off just buying the camera with a stock 18-55 mm IS lens (a Great Little understated lens) and then buying your other lenses separately. That way you don't waste a lot of money on lenses that are not the best of quality. Kit lenses are not the best of quality, I found that out when I bought my Canon 30D. I have since sold off most of the kit lenses (except for the 18-55 IS lens) and replaced them with quality lenses. I wish that I would have listened the suggestions of other photographers and done exactly what I am telling you. I would have been Money Ahead and Way More Happy!

Build a table to determine what features you would use.  The 7D has the HD video but it will eat up your memory card.  So you have to take that under consideration.  If you do not care to take HD Video then go with the cheaper camera.  The cheaper camera has a slower shutter speed then the 7D as well. 

I agree with all the rest of the folks about spending the money on lenses.  The IS stands for Image Stabalization so you get a sharper image.   If you are looking for a place to order your product if you are buying new is B&H Photo.   Here is the link..
