Single pin bow sight????
« on: June 24, 2010, 10:21:33 AM »
OK, went to local archery shop yesterday to check out the chance of adding a pin or 2 to my tru glow 5 pin sight.  Was informed that yes it could be done.   BUT, why not go to a single pin sight, for various reasons etc, etc, etc.  It actually made sense.  Mind you I'm fairly new to archery hunting, and lots of things make sense to me.  But I seem to still try and put the round peg in a square hole.  I guess my question is does anybody use the single pin?  Why or why not.

I just bought the G5. It has 1 pin that you set say 25 or what you want. then it has an adjustable pin. I shot with it last weekend did good, will hunt with it this year to see how good it does in the wild

It's a personal choice.  For me, I don't like single pin because your limited to whatever distance the pin is set at.  There are also slider pin which I find it difficult to operate or introducing more mistakes when that opportunity presents.  I like 3 fixed pins.

I was told that you zero at 20 and mark the spot.  Move adjustment and zero at 60 and mark the spot.  Then your bow speed it put into a computer and it prints out a program that you attach to your sight.  And it will hit the spot at whatever you set it at.  Once again it makes sense, but I might be described as an  idiot.  Maybe not idiot, but more uninformed as a bow hunter

I now shoot fixed pins . In the past Ive short a sightmaster with two pins top pin adjusts to the scale and the bottom pin adds aprox 20 yards in a pinch . I'm thinking of going back to that method .

i have used the sightmaster as well with the single adjustable pin and have never that i can remember having a issue with it for hunting.
i keep it on 30 yards usually and when calling or stalking if i see something i adjust to what i feel that animal is at or will be at when it is coming in.
it is a personal choice on what a person likes to use.. for me i like that second to collect my thoughts and move my sight.

I've shot targets and hunted w/3 pins for years. I killed two elk at 60 yds and one w/tail at 50 yds. Most are within 15 to 25 yds. I know of guys who have several pins and when the shot comes they use the wrong pin. If you have a fast bow, 3 pins is all you need. :twocents:

I bought a bow that came with a single pin "pendulum" SP? sight it was adjustable and have a place to mark yardages and you just turn the knob say 20,30,40,50 yrds etc and it was set but the pendulum part was for tree stands it was on an axis and the sight stayed vertical as your bows angle changed.

Long and short It was a pain in the ass and i swapped to a 3 pin.

i started with a single slider but will never go back, try being at full draw and have a elk or bear or deer be at 40 yard which your pin is set at. draw your bow and then have it run to about 15 yards from ya and you are at full draw ;) not very easy to mess with :chuckle: that is why i switched never happened in the field but that is what i was affraid of with a single pin.

I'm or 4 or 5 pin kind of guy.

My new Limbsaver Speedzone is pretty much set with one pin out to 35-40yds...but I tend to practice to about 80yds. I may not use them while hunting, but long shots are fun at the range.

I've not yet "confused" pins and over/undershot a target or animal, and it's nice knowing exactly where to hold at 60yds...rather than "hold-over" and hope I got it right. JMHO.
I left it better than I found it...did you?
I hunt animals because veggies are too easy to stalk.

My dad has used a single pin sight for 10-12 years. It is adjustable but he leaves it set at 20 yards and compensates for yardage the way you would  with crosshairs on a rifle. I'm not sure how he does it but he has put down atleast 10 bull elk with that setup. I like my multi pin fixed sight.

I use the HHA single pin adjustable sight that can be set to the yardage. When I am hunting I have it set at 30 and given the time to range and adjust, set it to whatever yardage I need. It is a good set up and havent had it screw me up yet. I can get 10 to 80 yards with it and have had really good luck so far with it.

single pin adjustables are great sights... for target shooting/3d. but when you on a stock and an oppertunity presents only breifly are you going to have time to range then adjust your sight. they are great sights when you have all the time in the world. but of the handfull of deer i have killed only one gave me the time it would take to get this all done. i like the flash point fix sight by black gold. great sight.

i like the idea of a single fixed pin set at 30 yds , but a single pin to 40 yds requires a pretty fast bow and a lot more practice than i've had (only had a bow about 3 months). out to 30 yds on a single pin seems easy enough, but  at ~270 fps with a 438 grn arrow i am seeing almost a 16 inch drop between 30 and 40. that's a lot of kentucky windage for my amateur a$$.  :chuckle:

i am thinking of doing something similar. i read an article recently about using two pins - one set at ~25 yds for everything inside 30, and another set at ~35 yds for anything from 30-45 yds. the article involved a little math with arrow speed, weight, and drop to determine exact settings, but when all is said and done you end up with two pins and only need to make a call of inside or outside of 30 yds.

Never had it be a problem yet set at 30 bumping through slow. And hold a bit high at 40 low at 20 and your good to go. But if you have time to range it then you generally have the extra second to adjust cause thats all it takes. Better yet have all the time in the world cause you got in close and the animal doesn't know your there.

I shot single pin for the first time last year and loved it.  I have mine sighted from 20 to 70 yards and leave it set at 30.  I will not adjust unless the animal is further than 40.  Anything less than 30 hold dead on....1-2 inches high at best.  At 40 I am about 4 inches low so just make the adjustment.  Never again will I pick the wrong pin in a multi pin sight.

I also do most of my hunting in places where shots over 40 yards are extremely rare.  Most being 15-30 yards.

Personal choice, try both and stay with what you like.

I've shot a 5 pin fixed for many years and taken a lot of critters.  I bought a target bow this year with a sliding sight.  I couldn't get around how dang nice it was to only have one aiming point to worry about.  I liked it so well I bought a used single pin hunting sight (Tru-Glo Range Rover) to try on my hunting bow.  Seems to be the ticket!

If I had to guess I'd say that almost half of the animals I've taken with a bow have been by putting all of the pins on it and pulling the trigger instead of using the proper pin since they were close enough to not matter which pin to use; and all of the animals I've missed have been because of this as well.  Going to the single pin fixes that problem for me.

I just pulled the trigger on the new g5 , one  fixed pin and a mover on the bottom . I like the idea of a better sight window and that goto top pin. the new bow should be here first of the week can't to get it set up.

that's kinda like my x force all five pins are so close together 0-60 i can put all the pins on a elk sized animal and still be good to go. but of course i am not going to do that. i will always use the pin for the right yardage if it is known. if not i will guess the closest one and more then likely be o.k. :IBCOOL:

That's what you'd think from me, too.  But the reality of my 25 years of bowhunting is that I rarely do everything right.  Just because I know what to do doesn't mean I do it each time.  Having only one fiber glaring at me helps.  As long as I can remember to change the yardage as needed, then it will make ME a much more effective bowhunter.
