I found this tree while cutting wood today. What do you think made these marks?

I say bear, they are natorious for scraping trees to get to the cambium, however its hard to say, bears should be hibernating, but if it's on the westside its possible.  Cougars, just like domestic cats scratch their claws on trees.  Hard to say for sure, but they look fairly deep so i'm going with Bear.

I don't think so phool, but we did see a few of those Friday night. Those marks aren't fresh, so it could have been a bear. I thought they would peel more bark than that. Someone should know from here.

Not bear. Almost looks like eyeguards. Any elk or monster bucks up that way? What ever it is it is very old.

The first thing I thought when I saw it was "Scratching Post". There are some nice bucks and bulls around but I don't think it's that. The top of the marks are about 5 to 6 feet off the ground. I'm thinking Cougar. I have seen a rather large Bobcat though. It's right off the edge of my property. Have you ever had the feeling something is watching you?
