30 mile training trail-run about 2 weeks ago with 4300' of climbing, 21 miles in/out on a scouting trip into the backcountry on Thursday, solo bivy scouting trip tonight deep into the backcountry, and on July 10th.... 32 mile ultra (my first) with 6,000' of vert.  I spend all year waiting for 350 nearly worthless days to pass me by until the next elk season and I'll be damned if I am going to puss out on the mountain!  Whatever you do for working out it is better than nothing, so do not let up, do not quit, failure is not fate... it is a choice you passively make.  74 days to go?  By my count anyway, no time to waste - get off the couch.

I am thouroughly convinced bulls are killed between September 30th and September 6th, it is simply the formality of arrowing them, tagging them, and packing them out that we all have to participate in during the season. I've already got the opening day jitters and it is still June.  Crap this is going to be a long summer.

You are SO RIGHT!  The past three years my elk hunting has suffered considerably because I have been so overweight and out of shape.  Really looking forward to this season.  I will never again allow myself to get to where I was...I can't afford to.

any kidding aside , it's time for the summer push to get in better shape. I don't know if any of you guys have heal spurs but there a bitch. come hunting season it's easy just keep step'in . I think we always wish to be in better shape just do what you can no regrets come fall . I'm finding at 40 there's gonna be a changing of the gaurd soon , these kids just keep getting stronger and stronger , good thing I got extra pack frames.

For the last 3 weeks or so been doing about 30- 36 miles per week on bike and throwing in the P-90x to boot. It hurts but it's worth it. Just got back from flinging arrows and bugling practice too. Still need to hit the mountain for some hikes though.

Just curious what bugling practice is? Not being a smart ass but are you talking about a class (or group of guys) or just getting outside and practicing? Since December I have been practicing like mad almost everyday in the car to and from work (trying figure out these damn mouth reeds) I actually record myself and listen to it at work - as well as listening to actual elk. I think it has paid off - we'll see come september. Needless to say there are more than a few people that I work with that think I am a little insane. The other day my boss walked up on me bugling in the car out in the parking lot  :chuckle: :chuckle:
