Fur Sale results

Alright it's been a while since the NAFA and FHA sales. Anybody want to brag on prices.LOL I know miserable prices but what did you get for your fur anyway?
Here's a little run down on my averages from NAFA. All prices are net.

Beaver, ouch $11.15 average. I high graded the best out for private sales but still horrible. Glad I didn't put a lot of effort into beaver.

Castor, worked out to $5.45/beaver. Ok, that helps with poor beaver prices but still not enough.

Coyote, sold one for $1.37 other one bought back. I know we have horrible coyotes but wow! Won't be trying to catch any for that price. Kind of knew it would be bad but again wow!

Cats, I sold all my cats but one privately. It brought $70.30. So up a little from last year. Coastal cats you know. Hard to tell much though with a  one cat average. It was a decent cat.

Muskrat, Only four but a $6.54 average. Had one small that really drug the average down otherwise around $8.00. Everybody knew rats would be good. I only wish I had some around here.

Possum, sent two for a $.68 average. What can I say.They're possums, not worth the effort but I hate to waste anything.

Otter, Sold 18 for a $47.71 average. I think otter are coming back a bit,emphasis on the bit.

Raccoon, Another ouch, only$5.66 average. I did have a few pretty poor ones but again ouch!

Mink, Only two for a $12.28 average. Hard to believe they have fallen to such a low level but they have been there for a number of years.

Not a very uplifting report. You really have to love trapping and fur to keep at it.

I have a ton of legholds sitting in my garage that are probably worth more as a decoration on some city dwellers wall than they will ever be in the woods again.  I think I am saving them in case end times come and I need to catch clothes and or food.

Are the prices cause of lack of demand?

Been a lot of discussion on this very question on other forums I frequent. Lot of thoughts on this but it is not lack of demand for fur. There are more fur garments being  produced now then at any time in history. I know, what's up with that? A couple answers. To begin with wild fur is now really tied to Russia. When the Russians don't have money wild fur is going to be in the toilet. When oil was high they had money and fur prices were advancing. They just don't have money for fur at $70 oil. They still want it just can't afford it. Also the Greek financial crisis came at a bad time for the auctions. In case you don't know Greece buys a lot of wild fur, manufactures them into fur garments for importation into Russia. The two in combination kept Russian and Greek buyers home. The greek crisis depressed the value of the euro against the dollar too which didn't help.
The other big buyer of fur is China but they buy ranch fur heavily. Ranch Mink were down a bit but not like wild fur. China is the biggest manufacturer of fur garments in the world and they are geared to big assembly line type processing. This is right up ranched furs alley. Ranch fur has really taken over the fur markets.
As far as I know there is only one processor that shears beaver now. That paricularly hurts beaver. Raccoon almost all goes to Russia so they'll be down till oil goes up and we need cold Russian winters along with that. The Chinese are getting back into the otter market but nothing like a few years ago before they banned their import. Muskrats are up because they are a cheap alternative to ranched mink. Coyotes, I don't expect to ever see a decent price on them, strictly a trim item.
Cats are a bright spot. Could improve a little but coastal cats are, well, coastal. East side cats are nice though and priced accordingly.

do you have any with Kurts trigger system?? I would love to see them..I want three bobcat cage traps,,how tall do you have??

All cage trapped?  Terrible prices once again.  Kept all mine and tanning it and having hats and mittens made out of some.  Tanning the rest myself for wall hangers.

No, I spend some time in OR every year trapping. Had to cut it short this year but I did go down for a couple weeks. I also do ADC work on the Quinault Reservation so pretty much all the water animals caught with conibears. My cats were all cage caught.

Yep, that's why I haven't bothered for a long time.  Skinning them at this point is just pissing time/ money  away unfortuantly.  If I catch any monsters in thier prime (dec-feb) , I may make the effort and get the hides tanned, but nothing has really been worth the time to do it in the last several years. I think I gave the last two I skinned to Rasbo - they had been in the freezer for a least three years.......  After gettin paid to catch em, it's hard to justify loosing money on processing them

well now if your in it for the money,its not working..I still enjoy and get a certain satisfaction out of trapping..I need to build a little room for working and hanging fur.Thats holding me back from going ape on them....Hey getting money for beaver instead of paying...You decide

So.. You have a hobbie that pays?  Of the near $1200 you grossed, how much of that would go to this years trap, fuel, bait, permits, and tanning expenses?

Until a few years ago I always made a profit on trapping, sometimes a good profit sometimes barely a profit. Last couple years I'd say I'm about break even. Most of that goes to vehicle expenses.
I've never been what you might call a high roller and made a living from trapping. Probably the most I ever made from fur trapping was about $10,000 over 3 months, real profit after expenses but a lot of hours.
ADC stuff, I won't fool with it if it isn't profitable.
