HELP...I Drew a cow tag for Margaret.I know where it is but not where to go.I'm going to check it out this weekend (I HOPE).Some of the people I talked with say its like NW Trek.Sounds to good to be true. Thanks Greg

good luck i don't know the area and would help if i did but most people will not give you info on spots to go to. a lot of new members only ask a few questions like were to hunt and "spots" and never come on again. you might check out the intro page and post there is you have not yet and share some pics most people will give a better response when ya do that. welcome to the site

I've only wandered into the margaret through the winston(west end of margaret) Definetly alot of elk. Which tag did you draw? The early season gets locked out if its really dry so pray for rain. Good luck and have fun.

You will see more elk than youve ever seen in your life.No BS
Its hard to say what gates you will get to go through.But just buy one of the cheap Weyco maps and go up there and cruise around.Enjoy the sites,the elk and have fun.Dont worry about shooting one opening morning or you will miss out on a lot of good scenery.Its worth the drive.Its worth spending a few days up there looking around.Heck you will probably see 20 -40 legal bulls a day.Let alone the cows.

Once you think youve seen enough.Kill your elk and go home.You will be able to kill one pretty close to the road.So dont shoot one down in some hell hole.

Heck you can fill a tag pretty easy just driving up and down the hiway.If you do just get off the road before you shoot.

my brother and friend had bull tags a few years ago there are cows everywhere find a spot to glass and sit watching the 30ft nobles and you will see lots of elk, call weyco hot line and when the gates are open go check it out try upper hoffstead creek anywhere around the high lakes are good

I think some people may have some misconseptions about the Margaret Unit. I would consentrate around the Nobles or High lakes, you can get there via hiking or mountian bike from Mirrata creek ( I don't think that is spelled right) or another good one in the "run away truck ramp". If for some reason the woods are open for drive in I would go back towards Miners creek. I've seen some good bulls and herds there but by no means is it shooting fish in a barrel. Hunting is still hunting no matter what unit your in. Good luck to you and PM me if you need some clarrification or just some tid-bits.

Weyerhaeuser just sold a big block of land west of the Fawn Lake/Mirrata Creek areas, etc. in the last week or so and it will likely be closed to hunting this fall.

That property was sold over a year ago and was still huntable last year.  Where are you getting your info?

The "new" sale that closed is about 5,100 acres due west of the property sold to St. Helens Properties in 2008. Source is reliable...info on sale is public record.

If I were you I wouldn't hunt up there for a cow. They are everywhere down low, and you want to do as little work as possible packing one out. If you want to see a lot of bulls, go up high. Thats just my

Our hunting party has been fortunate enough to draw 5 early season muzzleloader cow tags and 2 modern rifle cow tags for the Margaret unit as well.  I have never been to the unit and can't wait to do some scouting to see what all the hype is about.  One potential problem we have is that the two people with the modern rifle permits are seniors and have disabled hunter permits, so access may be an issue.  They can walk but any serious hiking is not going to happen.  They will have help packing any animals but that's about it.  Any info on the best access during that last week of November for cows would be greatly appreciated.  I assume that all roads that are generally opened will be open at that time of year but just don't know where to begin planning.  The previous locations discussed have given me names of places to map but any further info would be greatly appreciated.  This will most likely be some of the last hunting these two seniors will ever do for elk and I want to maximize their enjoyment.  Thank for all that have contributed info in this thread!

Archery hunted for bulls in 2001.  Shot the thirteenth legal bull I was less than 100 yards from that day. I didn't know there were any drive in areas when I was hunting.  My elk was 4 1/2 miles by road behind a locked gate.  Got lucky and had some guys checking beehives give us a ride out with it.

I drove out toward the interpretive center.  There is a long bridge that curves to the right a mile or two? before the end of the road. (OK, looking at the map, I think I was just outside the Monument and hunted to the west of Fawn Lake.)  Right off the east end of the bridge is a gated road.  I mostly hunted the fork to the west and had a shot at a 4 point (20 yards) twenty minutes after the opener about a quarter mile in.  The bulls bugled nicely for locating but few would leave their handful of cows to come in.  The bonus for a cow tag is that every raghorn has a few cows around and they are not hard to find.  Fun hunt!

bring your mountain bike. you can cover alot of ground.its all uphill to the lakes and its nice to coast back down

I accessed this area today through the Weyerhaeuser gate by Maratta Creek.  I walked in a ways with my kids to take a look and when I left there was a guy and what looked to be his sons digging holes for a new gate.  He told me (he was nice about it) that it was private land.  I apologized and left.  Looks like he is getting the gate in before hunting season rolls around so I doubt it will be accessible.  If that's the case it's too bad....that sale included a good chunk of prime elk country.
