Getting antsypants to shoot this enfield (It sucked!).
« on: October 23, 2009, 07:26:17 AM »
I have three scopes in route today for delivery
two 3-9x40 scopes and a fixed 4x bushnell
I will be taking off my Bushnell 4XBanner scope and mounting a 3-9x40 today.

I wish i had a Bore lazer for adjusting the scope in my house before heading to the range.
Its always alot easier to just point and shoot, adjust a tad, shoot again. adjust, shoot and call it good.
Rather than Shoot, adjust ALOT, shoot, Adjust alot more. up to 20 times.

rather keep the barrel as cool as possible for a better cold zero.

But i just want to get out and play a little lol!.............wait...........Damn rain!  :bash:

Ahhh the Enfield.  I have a sporterized Enfield in 30-06 that I hunt with, my dad hunted with before me and my grandpa hunted with before him.  I love that rifle.  Far and away the most accurate rifle I own.  I almost wanted to take it to Iraq with me, being such a good, reliable old friend that it is.  Yours is prettier than mine, though.

I have p17 enfield as well.  No longer a 30-06.  Before it was rebuilt you could shoot around corners with it.  Right now it sits in the safe....rebuilt by my brother when he was with Arnold Arms...now a 25-06 and deadly accurate even with a cheap, cheap scope.  I want to restock it someday....good luck with it, I certainly enjoy mine.

I love the one I have also, a little heavy but accurate as can be. Im thinkging about bedding the stock on the one I have though. yours is also much better looking then the one I have.

thought the Scopes would have showed up today or yesterday, but UPS doesnt deliver common ground items on Saturdays.  :bash:
Oh well, guess friday night i will get them. we are always his last delivery before heading in for the night. WHICH SUCKS ALOT WHEN I AM EXPECTING A PACKAGE!!! lol!

I fired only 50 rounds through this since i got it a few years ago from my Uncle (fishseeker), not being able to clearly see what i was aiming at and knowing 100% where i was hitting, i opted to keep it a safe queen until i scope it for safety reasons.
Now, as soon as i get the stronger scope, i will go destroy some paper and play.  :chuckle:
I cant wait hehe!

When I bore sight a bolt rifle, I set the rifle in some kind of holding device.  I first used a cardboard box with notches cut out for the rear of the stock and the fore of the stock.  I remove the bolt, sight through the bore and center some target that is across the room or out the window in the back yard.  Use the scope adjustments to move the crosshairs up or down, side to side till the crosshairs are merging over the target.  Should be boresighted now as long as the rifle remained still in its cradle.

i was going to do that this way off my wash machine/workbench and out the back door facingthe neighbors house across the allyway.
Hispanic family over there may get nervous though.   :yike:

I would like to find me a lazer bore sighter. then i can do all my rifles at the range in a dim day to get a feel of where i am actually supposed to be placing the forward sight in the rear valley on the rear sight with all my Iron sight rifles.

wow, even after i bore sighted this old goat in, it didnt even touch the paper at 100 yards, after a few shots left or right i finally hit then adjusted.
got to "around" the bull, just not good enough.
got to 1" high at 100. but these piles of crap Federal fusions can kiss my backside. my rifle hates them.

Today i free floated the barrel (again). seems my stock may have warped a tad. it was touching too much at the forward end. i placed two shims under the front lug. hope this helps. atleast until after Deer season. then i will most likely refinish the rifle again.
Might even have a new barrel installed later on if i cant get atleast a 2' group at 100 yards.

First thing to do is get rid of that Enfield 7 pound trigger with creap as long and rough as Cher's nose.

Timney sells a drop in trigger that's tunable to near 2 pounds with a sweet crisp break.

Then glass/pillar bed the action in that stock. That old barrel should to double moa or better. Run some Remington 180 CoreLokts or Winchexter Silver tips. Heavier = better. Longer bullet for more land contact for the rolled shallow lands of the Enfield barrel.

There are custom barrels available for the Enfields, but smiths that work that old action are getting tougher to find. Removing a barrel from an old Endfield can sometimes crack the action.

well, after the cleaning and shims, heres what i ended up with.
I circled my grouping of three faster shots in a row at 100 yards.

then dinked around with dialing it in.
was all over the board but still grouping.

Finally got fed up, aimed rifle at center with one hand and eye & turned vertical all the way over to the holes. Chambered a round & fired.
Turned vertical & elevation to the hole, repeated a couple times walking the POI over and up and ended up with near 2" high at Bull.
called it a day, friend that was driving had to leave for hunting.
cleaning and shimming under the forward lug did wonders for the old girl. I like it again now.

I FINALLY figured out what the frick was up with this not shooting the way i wanted it too.

The scope base was put on improperly and leaning forward.
I shimmed it up with two pop can shims (cut rectangles and pleaced under base)

Then went back to the range. not good enough so i shimmed the scope in the rings, one shim under the front and one under therear for even pressure.

At 100 yards i am shooting where i aim finally, Bullet was using the same hole as the previous bullet made.
3 shots out of 3 into a 4x4 neon square target at 200yds.

Good enough for me! Also get to use the Bushnell 3-12 scope now that i finally figured out why it wouldnt hold a zero, Mike Palazzo will never work on my rifles again.
I spent more than $300 making his mess finally shoot correctly.
