...check to see if the bullet its self is engaging the rifling.  Today we use longer bullet's with higher case loads than they did then so our bullets today are actually longer!  Try this:

Take a brass casing and try fitting it in the chamber, if it goes then try a loaded cartridge.  prior to sticking the loaded cartridge in the chamber, take a black Sharpe and blacken the bullet, you may see where the bullet is engaging the rifling.  You will then know that you need to reload for a shorter chartridge.

Or check the barrel stamp one more time to make sure it dosent say 300 sav.  On some earlier ones it was sometimes double stamped and could turn out looking like an 8 rather than a 0 :bash:.  And wile the gun is at the gunsmith, have him make a chamber cast to ensure its a .308

Hope you get it figured out!!

i've also heard that the 308 was a pretty tight squeeze for the m99 because the design was originally made for shorter calibers like the 300 savage.
you can still get gas in heaven, and a drink in kingdom come,
in the meantime, i'll be cleaning my gun

Just found a post on another site about the same problem.  Are you sure that .308 is not .303?  Not to be a snot or anything but age can blur a stamp. Does it have Win. stamped into it or did you assume Win followed what looked like .308?

if it was grandpa's gun and not only said it was 308 but also gave you ammo to go with it...... i would trust him

It sounds like it's time to get a new gun.

OK,
First off, thank you all for your help. I do feel like a idiot for this but here it goes.

Just picked it up from the gunsmith tonight. When I originally dropped it off, even he could not see any obvious reasons for the problem. So he had to disasemble it and low and behold half of the case from the last shot I put through it some 20 years ago was jam packed into the barrell. The case split right at the neck and when I ejected the round the bottom half of the case completely came appart and only ejected that part.

Why I didn't ever notice it, I have no idea. I cleaned it afterwards and hell I even cleaned and inspected it before I took it out a few weeks ago.

It is in fact a .308WIN and I still have to box of ammo that this shell came out of... or I should say I did have. Cause I *censored* canned that crap as soon as I got home.

The gunsmith completely inspected the gun and cleaned and reassembled and even put 10 new factory Federal rounds through it with no problems.

So I am now a happy camper. This year will more than likely be my last year being able to hunt with my Grandfather and I can think of no better way to end it then with the gun he and I used on my first deer, elk and bear.

Last pic is with one of the .308 rounds from the box that this came out of, so you can see how much of the case actually came off.

Good to know what happened.  I'd been wondering about this also.  Nice to know it didn't mess up the action.

What gunsmith did you take it to?  I have a 99 that I need some work done on.

i just recently refinished a 99 in 300 savage for a buddy, his father in law had engraved his WDL # all over it. so i removed all the engraving and did a few repairs to the wood while i was at it.
TANNERITE needed for target practice on opening day of each hunting season.

This reminds me that I've got an old model 99 in 300 savage that I need to get a new front sight put on.  Got it from my Grandpa too.

wow thats crazy, i cant say ive seen a casing do that before......

i love my 99 (like most of us... got it from my gramps), but there was one thing thats been bugging me... any ideas on how to get some life back into the rotary mag? mine kinda just flopps around and you can put 5 in, but really only be able to use 3, there isnt enough spring in it to cycle the last 2 rounds... its more of an annoyance than anything but.....

anyway congrats on getting it fixed its a helluva rifle!

happy shooting
catch it. kill it. cook it. eat it.
Forget the bear spray, use wasp killer. Concentrated delivery stream, 10X the product, and only $3.00 on sale.

I did the serial number check on my 300 savage last night and came up with a born on date of 1949.
