Nooksack River Black Bears **UPDATED W/ PICS AND VIDEOS**
« on: June 29, 2010, 11:15:05 PM »
Well now I'll actually tell the story.

Alecvg and I headed up into the hills for a quick trip after work.  It wasn't long before Alec spotted the first bear.

It wasn't long before we immediately spotted two more bears.  The second bear was a big brown/red color phase that was sleeping under a tree.  The third was a much smaller bear way up high and hidden under a tree.  That is the first time I have ever seen a bear sleeping like this.

We decided to see if we could get any closer.  Right as we were moving into the trees to make a sneak on the bears, Big Red stood up.  We thought maybe he had spotted us.  Once we were within a couple hundred yards we figured out what made him stand up.  A fourth bear had come out of the trees and was beginning to feed.

Notice how he has some hairless spots on his rump.  I wonder what that is from?

I got some video of this bear as well.  He fed back and forth through the meadow twice.  He would feed until he got close to the first bear we met (which had moved uphill and closer to us by this point) and then he would run and feed in the other direction until he crossed paths with Big Red.  Eventually he just moved up hill a ways and stayed out of the two bigger bears ways.

Eventually Big Red fed out closer to us and we were able to watch him for about half an hour before we backed out and headed to the truck.  We were able to watch 4 total bears, 2 of them were feeding within 200 yards of us for over half an hour.  None of the bears had any clue we were there.

First.... That is a  :mgun: for sure.
Second... I think the hump is visible due to the position of the shoulder....?
Third.... Depending where on the Nook, it could be some inter breeding ?

Great bear.  Yes, posture is causing the hump.  Just a shooter black bear, easily makes P&Y too!

Beautiful...That bear hasn't missed any meals.  I'm hoping thats the trend this year with such a mild winter.

It sounds like it's time to get a new gun.

Small bear save him for seed.
