berries
« on: June 22, 2010, 08:42:15 AM »
I've been hoping that with the late spring and cool weather that the huckleberries might stay on a little later in the year.... actually i'm counting on it, the usually dry up and the bears leave about a week before bear season.

what do you think? Am I in luck?

I'm taking my 4 year old to whack one with me and I have a felling the huckleberries would keep her good and occupied.

What I have seen on some of the bushes so far is a good number of berries but that is down lower. When you throw in the higher elevations it may be a different story. i was up at around 4500 feet last weekend and there was still 3 or 4 feet of snow. This might have a effect of weather the berries mature soon enough and get pollenated. If we do have a early frost then the berries go to pot quickly. I know my blueberries are going well but thats at my house.

I want all the berries all gone by season opener.  Give a bunch of hungry bears to call in.   :chuckle:

I haven't called a bear in yet. I tried a fawn distress and a cotton tail distress with no luck for the past few years. Have you had luck with a particular call and brand?

We get our berries on the Mt.  Lat year we were still picking huckleberries at the end of September.  Really depends on where you're hunting them.  But i do know that bear and huckleberries go good together   :)

With a late start it may be a blessing in disquise.  If, the blue's make it, they will be on longer giving us a better shot later in the season when the bears are usually more spread out and difficult to find.

Took the family for a trip down USS 23 out of Randell. I stop on a creek 9 miles south. Strawberries are in flowers and the everything else has dropped flowers and have green berries starting. I do not have an altimeter so I am not sure what the elevation is. Around Randell the black berries are green and I would say at least 4 weeks.

BTW; cut throat are plentiful but small.
