Best 3X9X40 for under $300
« on: July 01, 2010, 12:39:02 PM »
Can anyone recommend a brand/ model 3X9x40 scope in the $150-$300 dollar range? I have purchased the Nikons in the past and had good luck with them. That was many years back so I'm interested to hear what you all are buying as of late.

Leupold VX II would come in at the upper end of that range, could check a pawn shop and find one in the $200 range probably.  Just no way you can go wrong with a Leupy. :twocents:

Burris Fulfield II imo is the best bang for your buck scope, I like the leupolds but would for out the extra cash for a vxIII. I like the burris over the vxII.  :twocents:

I have Burris Fullfield II.  The only issue I have with mine is when you adjust the magnification the whole rear objective rotates with it. A real PITA if ya use scope covers. Other than that it is a good clear scope, although my next scope will not have a ballistic compensator gauge on it. I would rather just use the good old fashion cross hairs.

I also like the Burris FullField II. I think it transmits light better than the VXI and VXII. Its in my opinion the best bang for your buck.

I have many Leopolds, but I honestly beleive Nikon has sharper glass than even a VX-III. However, if you buy Leopold I think you are supporting american workers.  :twocents:

Just for the record, this month's Eastman's HJ says the Vortex Viper is a good buy for around $300.  Never owned a Vortex, used one of their spotting scopes in Montana last fall (actually, my hunting partner had one), and it wasn't great, but it was the cheap model, probably to be expected.
I am not personally recommending it, but it might be worth looking into... :dunno:

I really have had great service with my Leupold scopes and wouldn't have tried others until Don at Kesselring's suggested I look through a Zeiss.

I have Zeiss on three big mags now and really like the site picture and clarity.

I don't have the years of experience with Zeiss that I do with Leupold to say it is as good long term in the field but so far they have been great.

Can't go wrong with the Leupold but if you can pick up a Zeiss in the $3 to $400 range it would be worth checking out.  I have seen an occasional one used for under $300.

Sorry, typo. Meant to type BDC. Great scopes for around $250. I bought one on sale for $120 online a while back. Used it on my .270 wsm.

This is an easy one.  Minox Z3a 3-9x40 for $289 delivered to your house from Doug at cameralandny.  I haven't looked through one, but all the reviews say they are easily on par with the Leupy VX3 and Zeiss Conquest.  The next choice would be spend a little more money and get a Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40 delivered to your house for $369.  However, all the reviews say the Minox is just as good as the Zeiss but in a small package like the Leupy, so why buy the Zeiss?  For those of you that don't know of Minox, they used to be owned by Leica and are very, very good Euro glass.  Their warranty is transferable and no questions asked.  I dropped a pair of my Minox bino's and they fixed them for free.

Wow, that brings back memories.  My mom killed many a deer with a Rem. 760 with a Bushnell scope with a post.  It was the gun I learned to shoot hunting rifles on.  Great scope.
By my honorable conduct as a hunter let me give a good example and teach new hunters principles of honor, so that each new generation can show respect for their god, other hunters and the animals, and enjoy the dignity of the hunt.

Those are good ole scopes!  My dad has one on his 760 and uses it every year!  He has he set on the crosshairs but can switch it to the post.  I think it's the scopechief II.

For a scope under $200 my recommendations would be the new Redfield Revolution, under $300 - Lepould VXII, under 400- Zeiss Conquest

The Cabelas Alaskan Guide Scope is an excellent Scope with clear optics and excellent light trasmition.  A scope Leupold scope of the same quilty would sell for $500 and the Alaskan Guide scope only runs about $260.

http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/product/standard-item.jsp?id=0080446713428a&navCount=3&podId=0080446&parentId=cat20760&masterpathid=&navAction=jump&cmCat=MainCatcat602006-cat601558-cat20760&catalogCode=XA&rid=&parentType=index&indexId=cat20760&hasJS=true

So now that I put my plug in for Cableas  ;) I must say that I'm a Nikon guy!  I would strongly sudgest the Nikon Buckmaster which runs $210 or $220 for the BDC or mil-dot reticle.  Again clear optics, strong body, lifetime warenty from Nikon, water & fog proof, there's no reason to spend more money on higher dollar scopes.

I much prefer Nikon to Leupold but thats my  :twocents:.

I own Burris Fullfields a couple Nikons and many Leupold's and I like them all.  The Leupold's VXIII my favorite but my last 3 scopes have been Vortex and I like them as well as the VXIII, for less money.  The Viper is gaining market share fast, wouldn't put it up with the Conquest but has very good glass for the money and has an unconditional warranty.  Call a Vortex rep.and have a chat, you won't be dissapointed.
