Just for the record, this month's Eastman's HJ says the Vortex Viper is a good buy for around $300.  Never owned a Vortex, used one of their spotting scopes in Montana last fall (actually, my hunting partner had one), and it wasn't great, but it was the cheap model, probably to be expected.
I am not personally recommending it, but it might be worth looking into... :dunno:

I really have had great service with my Leupold scopes and wouldn't have tried others until Don at Kesselring's suggested I look through a Zeiss.

I have Zeiss on three big mags now and really like the site picture and clarity.

I don't have the years of experience with Zeiss that I do with Leupold to say it is as good long term in the field but so far they have been great.

Can't go wrong with the Leupold but if you can pick up a Zeiss in the $3 to $400 range it would be worth checking out.  I have seen an occasional one used for under $300.

Can you buy a Ziess in that range?  I always thought they were $600-$700 scopes...?

Sorry, typo. Meant to type BDC. Great scopes for around $250. I bought one on sale for $120 online a while back. Used it on my .270 wsm.

eBay has a few.  Quick search has this at $389 no shipping not sure on sales tax saving.

The Burris Fullfield II is a really good scope, I don't know if you can get a better scope for the money:

This is an easy one.  Minox Z3a 3-9x40 for $289 delivered to your house from Doug at cameralandny.  I haven't looked through one, but all the reviews say they are easily on par with the Leupy VX3 and Zeiss Conquest.  The next choice would be spend a little more money and get a Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40 delivered to your house for $369.  However, all the reviews say the Minox is just as good as the Zeiss but in a small package like the Leupy, so why buy the Zeiss?  For those of you that don't know of Minox, they used to be owned by Leica and are very, very good Euro glass.  Their warranty is transferable and no questions asked.  I dropped a pair of my Minox bino's and they fixed them for free.

Heres a great review

Wow, that brings back memories.  My mom killed many a deer with a Rem. 760 with a Bushnell scope with a post.  It was the gun I learned to shoot hunting rifles on.  Great scope.
By my honorable conduct as a hunter let me give a good example and teach new hunters principles of honor, so that each new generation can show respect for their god, other hunters and the animals, and enjoy the dignity of the hunt.

Calling an illegal alien an 'undocumented immigrant' is like calling a drug dealer an 'unlicensed pharmacist'.

Those are good ole scopes!  My dad has one on his 760 and uses it every year!  He has he set on the crosshairs but can switch it to the post.  I think it's the scopechief II.

For a scope under $200 my recommendations would be the new Redfield Revolution, under $300 - Lepould VXII, under 400- Zeiss Conquest
