bear hunting help/advice, im lost.
« on: March 08, 2008, 05:50:05 PM »
ok, ive never hunted before, figure i would start off with that. so i decided to start, went and bought a deer/elk/bear/cougar tag and small game, anyways since i already got the the bear transport tag, if i get drawn for a special tag does that mean i can shoot 2 bears or still only one if i get drawn. also im from vancouver but have a sister who lives up in shelton so traveling north aint to bad, since im new to this, if possible how do you find out where to go, i seen on the websight to put in for choice 1, choice 2, and so on. i cant seem to find a map to pick units, any advice for a first time hunter on where to go would be appreciated.mainly i think im just looking for advice on how this also works. also this is off the subject, but i didnt recieve a deer/elk transport tag, do i gotta pick an area also before i get those or just go in and get a general hunt tag for them.
thank you all
jim

you should be able to find the hunt area maps on the wdfw site. I am sure you can only shoot one sping bear if you get drawn and yes you have to pick a side for elk hunting.

For the deer and elk tags you need to choose either modern firearm, muzzleloader, or archery, and than as Red Dawg said, you need to pick east or west for the elk tag also.

Wow. Lots of questions and so little time.
For bear you can only shoot two a year. One on the eastside and one on the westside. Only one can be killed in the spring by permit only. If you kill a spring bear on the eastside you can only hunt bear on the westside in the general season.

If you live down south your closest options for spring bear are Kapowsin (entry fee), Copalis and Monroe. On the F&G website you can find the info on the units and their boundaries. Be carefull as some are tricky. Copalis for instance is only on Rayonier land within the Copalis unit (they supply a cheap map).

Just a minor correction to info already posted...you are allowed two bear a year, and only one of which can come from the east side.  It is legal to kill two bears, both of which came from the west side.  One doesn't have to be from the eastside.

Correct, one does not have to be from the Eastside, but if you kill two, one better be from the West.
I have killed two a year on the westside a few times.

If you get drawn, you are only entitled to one bear unless you go buy a second Transport Tag. The permit is not your second bear.
Some people spend their entire life wondering if they made a difference. Marines don't have that problem.
