Carp fishing with my youngest son

I know, I know....garbage fish, right? However, they are in my opinion some of the funnest fish to fight and I often go out targeting these fish just for the fun of it. I typically use a light to medium action rod with 6-8lbs test. These set-ups really tests your ability to properly fight a fish and really makes it a bit more fun when trying to land these heavy SOBs.

I took my youngest son out with me today to see how many we could bring to the bank. He had never caught one before so this was his first experience. Boy did he have a BLAST!

We hooked 6, landing 3 of em. I landed two Common Carp and my little man landed a Mirror Carp, his first Carp ever. The other three fish managed to break our set-ups and live another day. Something you deal with when you are using light line/tackle.

 Just bread dough and sweet corn. I use a bit of wire wrapped around a hollow piece of tubing, smash the dough in around the wire to hold it in place and throw some sweet corn on the hook attached to the end. (My line is ran through the tubing with the hooks out the back end of it)

  Just like with most fishing, it's hit and miss most days. However, they were hitting well today. Fished early this morning, took a break during midday to eat and rest, then went back out this afternoon.

Thanks for the info.  I had to collect a few in June '08, couldn't get a bite to save my life, so shot them with my bow.

Thosre are some great looking fish.  Son looks like he was having a blast.

I have seen plenty of Common Carp but I do not believe I have ever seen a Mirror Carp.  The Mirror Carp looks like a Common carp but with some kinda scale mange.

Carp are a blast to catch. Especially on a fly rod.

I Love carp fishing, where I come from this is a serious sport!!  One of the best fighting fish ever!  And smoked carp is not bad at all!

So I have heard. However, I have not brought myself to actually try it yet. I know a few folks here in the Valley that smoke it also. Maybe I'll get a wild hair one of these days and throw one in my smoker. After all, I'm sure I've eaten worse in Thailand, Phillipines, Korea, etc. (Loved the food in these locations...just never bothered to ask what I was eating. Ignorance is indeed bliss in some cases.)

You are right though, they fight like hell and really are a kick in the rear when you get a really big one on.

The Brits get into their carp fishing, tents set up 12 poles going at once, guy shooting dogfood out into the water to get the carp to feed.

Ah, yes, the often hated round mouth bass.  A couple trophies there.  I spenst almost every waking moment as a kid in the summer fishing for carp in the Milwaukee River in Wisconsin.  Great fun and they do fight.
