Here's what I found this weekend
« on: July 04, 2010, 08:07:36 AM »
My hunting spot.  Ignore the date on the pictures.  The camera is a POS.

The entrance looking North.  It's on private property we have permission to hunt and it didn't look like a human had been there in years:

One of about half a dozen HUGE fresh beds.  This bed was 20' long by 7' wide.  The others were smaller averaging probably 6' x 3' and spread out.  Fresh poop and old poop everywhere.

Here's the view of the set up ground blind on top of the hill:

View from the ground blind looking West.  Notice the prominent shooting lane in the middle of the picture and another to the right.  at the end of these shooting lanes are well used deer lanes crossing them.  We made some salt lick areas there, placed a couple of trophy rocks and a few small piles of COB and apples.

Here's the view from the ground blind looking to the Northwest.  This meadow was heavily used and most of the brush had been trampled.  We also set up mineral licks, trophy rocks and COB/apples here.

Here's the look to the North.  again, this meadow was heavily used and baited.  The hills in the background is public land.  When those hills turn orange Oct 16th, we'll sit and wait for the hunters to push the deer to us.

This is looking South from the ground blind.  Another baited meadow.  Not as much here though as it is our entrance into the ground blind from the road.

Found at least half a dozen scrapes too.  Camera didn't take very good pics of those though.  We'll be going back to rebait with more COB and apples in August, September and then again about 3 days before the season.

Here's my 8 year old's first ever walleye.  It was only 14" so it had to go back but, he was happy anyway.  I am home now but he is still at the lake with his Papa and Nana.  Hopefully he'll get some good ones over the next few days.

Here's me and my 8 year old and 6 year old celebrating my 2 hard earned walleye.  They just weren't biting.

Life sure is good sometimes  :)

It was gorgeous. The camera does it absolutely no justice.

Rifle.  Just getting them used to the ground blind and human presence.  Might not bait so much, just my initial thoughts.

it may disrupt the natural setting, baiting .i would think just establishing a good spot for your blind and a good route in and out would not disrupt maybe the real reason the deer go there for, which probly would be for cover, bedding down, plus its private which works to your advantage maybe place a trail cam to monitor what happends in your area, the deer go there for a reason ,plus after opening day more deer and differnt deer may get pressured and reside there and hopefully for you a big ol buck

Can't tell....is that west of 21....hope it works out well.  I will be camped up on Vulcan Mtn, as always.  If your not set up already for the Whiteys swing by our camp "should" be just after the "Y" where little vulcan splits off.  I have had my kids up there for awhile,17,16,10 and this year the 9 year old will be there too.  I know a couple of spots for them but always looking for others.  Good luck on your hunt!

Get set up early opening day, you will see deer getting pushed through there that's for sure.  Don't be surprised to see a bunch of pumpkins walking all through there though come opening weekend, it's just one of those things.  You might want to have a couple of spots farther back and down from those fields, the deer WILL get pushed down there and they will stay there all week.  How many will be in your group?  Are you planning on camping in there?  If not like I said get there early because there will be a bunch of trucks parked in front of that upper gate.  I want to come by and see the deer stacked in your truck like cord wood. :)

Maybe I'll get there REALLY early and park my truck across the road so nobody can get past it.  That road splits the property so blocking it off so people don't have access to the private land should be ok.  After all, if it's private land, there is no reason for anyone to be in there, correct?
