Well after last year's hunts I noticed several large groups of brant in my area. After letting flock after flock pass, I called a biologist from WDFW about them. It seems that we have enough to hunt but the WDFW says there is not enough information on them to open a real season. In my area there are a bunch, how about you areas? If I can get some good feed back, I am going to push the biologist to write a report for at least my area and a limited hunt.

I saw a nice group of them in March in Port Angeles, then several groups off of Keystone.  After further driving around, I saw many scattered groups through the area.  Largest concentration that I ran across was from Padilla Bay up to Blaine.  Good number of birds in the area last season.

The groups I'm seeing are in the Canal. I am meeting with the local biologist next week to get the updated info on them.

They are more regulated than other types of waterfowl. They do a survey a few weeks before the planned hunting dates to see if the population is large enough for a season each winter.

We only get about a 5 day season if the count hits the 8K mark.  Makes for spendy birds as my 5 dozen brant decoys make it out about 3 days a year.

During the late part of the season we saw three different flock groups on in front of Everett.  They were there all the way through the month of January.  We estimated about 600 total birds between the three flocks.

It would be great to be able to hunt them where you scout them.  Unfortunately I think there is only two areas in the state you can legally hunt them.  Down towards Willapa Bay and Padilla/Samish Bay.
