I drew a WY Antelope tag

My party was drawn for unit 72, rifle.     Anybody else get drawn? Just got back from vacation, so I had to wait to post.
Now all the planning starts. Half of us are from WA and the other half from Cali, so lots of coordination needs to happen. 9 weeks will fly by. Need to order maps, get out conservation stamps, check out game processing places, etc.

Love how the tag isn't a tag, but a "carcass coupon" 

This is our first time going for them. Any helpful hints or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Me too. WooHoooooooo!!!!!!!      Got two doe (carcass) tags and a buck (carcass) tag.     Tell me when you guys are going so we can be a week early and shoot the bigguns before you get there and clean them out.

Try getting  Wy Gazetterr.  They are pretty good.  They show the Public Trust Land and other public land.  Check to see if your unit has any private land access blocks.  Get in on one of these.  Check the Wy web site.  I have been 4 times and the land block units and the Gazeeters can get you on good public privateland. Have fun stalking them.  I seldom had to take a shot over 100 yards.  don't get bummed if you blow a stalk - there will be another one along.  Another thing I saw was that most hutners were goneby 10 am.  I hunted all day and the best hunting as from 4 till dark.  We had big coolers with dry ice in each truck.  As soon as one was down it was skined, quarted, in game bags and cooling.  Otherwise you will bring home stinking meat.  Be prepared for all weather.  In one day it can go from 70 degrees to a blizzard with high wind, and back to hot.  If you are real luckyyou will get caught out in a thunderstorm.  That was a wild time.  If you are at high elevation drink a lot of water - if you or one of your group starts to get sick or headaches, it is the elevation and dehydraton.  Take tweezers you will get cactus. You will find out how good your budies are when you ask them to pull the thorns out of your butt.

Lots of antelope in 72.  Much of the land is private, but you can get access via the Walk In program.   I hunted 72 last year for does.

The Wyoming web site will have that information availible on the 13th, check it out for sure.  That state has great opportunities for Hunter Management Areas along with Walk in Areas.  The HMA you have to put in for it like a draw, but Walk In areas are open public areas.  The site has maps and everything explained that even I could understand.

One last tip on the HMAs.  They can go fast if there is a limit for when you want  to go.  As soon as the web is open to apply, get on and clik fast.  Seems to me that they post a day and time.  We all were late for work that day and were on line with a couple of PC's cliking away trying to all get the same days.

My buddy and I have kids that just turned 12 so cashed our points in to take them on an antelope hunt.  After pooling the grandpas in and putting everybody in for doe tags hoping to get us a few more opportunities, I find out we have 17 antelope tags.

That's a lot of pillow cases to fill... seemed like a good idea at the time?

I have only been once, but it was quite a bit like shooting rats at the dump.  Only advice I would offer is take LOTS of ammo!

Take lots of ammo and also have a plan for processing the meat.

And a place to put the meat and keep it cool for the trip home if you're gonna shoot 17 of them. Thats a lot of coolers.
 

I've heard calling game wardens is a good thing to do...they will know ranchers that allow hunting and want some speedgoats taken off their land.

Make sure you take really good care of the Cape if you plan on a mount.  The hair on antelope is some really touchy and it doesn't take much to cause it to slip.

Got 2 additional leftover doe tags yesterday for Unit 72. Now if everything works out; like all hunting plans do . I'll be coming home with at least 3 speed goat carcasses. Hell, if I limit out to quick I can always run into town and get 2 more doe tags.
Should be good times anyway.
