Special Use Permit
« on: July 12, 2010, 09:20:39 PM »
Over the fourth of July weekend I was up checking trail cameras in the Colville National Forest, on my way out I came upon two Forest Service law enforcement officers.  They were in the area responding to some ORVing complaints, so they checked me out and everything was good.  I mentioned to the officers that I was checking cameras and one of them asked if I was using bait, I replied with I am using salt.  One officer then stated that I needed a special use permit to use any bait (any type of attractant, including salt) on the Colville National Forest.  I asked him where I could obtain one of these permits and he chuckled and said that he did not know, he mentioned trying to contact the district office and maybe they could forward me to someone who knew.  Has anyone heard of this permit? I have looked on-line and have came up with nothing!  I know lots of hunters who use bait in the CNF, and not any of them has heard of this.  Any information would be appreciated as I like to be legal, and I can relay the messages to fellow hunters.

Thanks,
"Taken' It To The Limit"

Never heard of that. With a Google search I came up with this:  http://www.fs.fed.us/recreation/permits/film.htm

Might take a while to read through it all. Maybe you can find an answer to your question somewhere in there.

I've never heard of it either. You never know anymore though, you need a forest pass, a WDFW vehicle permit, a lunch permit, etc. etc.

the only permit you need is a permit not to tell him yes next time he asks that question!   :chuckle:  Sorry I'm no help to you

He's pulling your leg. No need to give him any more info than necessary, i.e. just say you were hiking. Trail cams might come up missing

I was thinking he may have been pulling my leg.  It was difficult not to mention the cameras, as it was suspicious that I was the only person in that entire area all day, I did not want them to think I had a grow operation or something of that nature (they put the pressure on me regardless; running my plates, drivers license, both doing circles around my truck inspecting it and lastly as I was about to leave one knelt down and examined my undercarriage to make sure I did not have brush stuck anywhere).  Anyway, the 150 pounds of salt in the back of my truck was a little bit of a giveaway.  They did not say the cameras needed a special use permit, it was the use of bait, regardless if there is a camera.
