You know it's funny with the 7mm remington mag, I've watched my Dad put animals on the ground with that gun for as long as I can remember, now it's my brothers gun and before he stepped up to a 7mm Ultra mag, I've watched him make 250 yard head shots with it on antelope does with that 7mm rem.   But ballistically on paper, there just isn't any reasion to develop an appreciation for it over most any caliber.  It truly doesn't do much of any thing better than a 30-06, other than kick more.  It doesn't in any way step up to compete with a 300 winny.  I know it's just me, I've just never developed any true appreciation for the round.
I didn't say it was your fault, I said I was blaming you.
If I ageed with you, then we'd both be wrong.

Of those two 7mm because it does everything better for deer and elk.  I assumed you meant cartridge not bullet.  Bullet is the part that flies not sits in the gun.

Its a toss up. There is NOTHING you can do with one, that you can't do with the other.

If I had to pick one,I'd pick the 7mm. Its shoots faster, flatter, and will penetrate more with equal bullet weights.

For those that are hung up on the "better" selection of bullets in .308,here is a list of .284 bullet weights from Midway. 100,110,115,120,130,140,145,150,154,156,160,162,168,175,180.

If you can't find a bullet weight from that list to do what you want with a 7mm,a 30-06 won't do it either.

well I have one in each caliber and I would choose my 30-06 over the 7mm because there is more diversity in bullet weights, and I believe that the -06 has more nock down power (per the load) and can be loaded just as hot as my 7mm.  I have heard a lot of people that lost game with the 7mm because you can load it so hott and fast and the bullet just doesn't pack the retention behind it to nock emm over as it is smaller in diameter.  I shot a 3 pt. blacktail at 112 yards with my 7mm and nocked it right off its feet and thought that was it! It was shakin and I watched it stop and thought that was it.  I went and got my dad, waited about 30 min total, then we walked down to the buck and there was more blood on the ground than I had ever seen before! bullet hole right behind the front shoulder and honestly couldn't have been a better shot, poked the deer to make sure it was dead and it jumped to its feet and took off haulin' down through the timber... never could find it!! that was enough of the 7mm for me!  :dunno:

Its a funny thing about those Blacktails. They just shrug off a "perfect" shot from a 7mm,but are cut and wrapped when hit with a .308. :chuckle:

7mm Mag, I am just a Magnum guy, LOL.
Honestly both are great.

I voted 30-06 just because I have never caught the magnum bug .
Killed a lot of game with .270 though I just built a .338-06.
Slenk

Slenk I built a .338-06 a few years back.  All I shoot is the 210gr nosler partion.  Have killed one bull and a couple deer with it, and i love it.
