300 wsm
« on: July 07, 2010, 09:13:47 PM »
Same old story........I got drawn for an any elk hunt and talked the wife into a new rifle. I love my old 270 in Ruger, but have permition to get a little bigger gun. I have decides on a 300 wsm, unless I find an unbelievable deal on a 300 win mag. I'm looking for input on which make and model you would not get and why. It's easy to say why you like this gun or that, but I'm looking for god reasons why not to get a certain gun. Any other ideas or opinions are very welcome.

Thanks Bug

I would get a steyer mannicher luxus. Steyer has them on sale right now for 1800 with schwenkmontage (swing quick disconnect mounts).  there is also an option for a Pycatinny rail.  It also comes with two sets of side plates, the engraved metal and the wood. It is a fairly modular system that allows you to change the barrels/calibers easily.  It has the steyer kryo hammer forged barrel that ends up with the spiral look to it. Since its the luxus it will have the top of the line wood and fnish.   Since it is a pure european rifle it comes with the set trigger as well.   It is a 3000euro set up.   My buddy just got one in 9.3x62 and it is SWEEEET.   Quality stuff for quality hunters at a good price is the reason.

Weatherby Vanguard in 300 win mag out the door with a nice scope and three boxes of ammo for $606.00 at Cabelas in Post Falls.  I love the gun.

I wouldnt get a common merkin joe shmo gun. there are just too many european beauties out there with forged recievers and hand carved stocks, heck they even shave their arm pits these days. My suggestions are on the basis that there isn't a  price range  :chuckle:

i wouldnt get another ruger..... you already have one lol

Thanks guy,
Unfortunatly I do have a price range, and I'm leaning tward stainless and sythetic. I cover to much brushy steep land to go with a "pretty" gun. I have heard good things about both the vangard and the tikka, and I heard good things about the New Ruger M77 and the Savage models. I've only heard bad about the cheap Rem model 700. one guy bought one (new) and it had a tweaked rear sight. He was also having issues with the company over fixing it.

you can get a howa 1500 cheaper than a vanguard, it's the same rifle without the goofy weatherby stock.
you can still get gas in heaven, and a drink in kingdom come,
in the meantime, i'll be cleaning my gun

I WOULDN'T get a Rem 700.
Too many lemons out there and even a decent one needs tweaking to bring it up to Tikka/Savage operability.
Not a Ruger fan...too crude.

Savage, Howa, Tikka or Weatherby all are good Savage and Tikka have the best triggers of the bunch. Stay away from Remington's, they aren't the guns that they were just a few years ago.  :twocents:

I wouldn't get a cheap model to save a few $, get the most gun you can afford. I WOULD get a Browning A-Bolt stainless stalker, I love mine!

I wouldn't but anything new.  Your .270 is fine.  I would spend my budget on upgrading my glass and and on scouting trips.  Your .270 is pleanty of gun.  Ammo is reasonably priced. You are used to it and it will kill the elk just as dead.  New gun, you worry about every scratch, need a new scope ($300+) too and your mind is distracted and not on your one chance here.  Great tag.  I would just focus on finding the elk, scouting and other preparation.   :twocents:
