30-30 loads Hornady Flex-Tip bullets
« on: July 11, 2010, 02:34:19 PM »
Now that I'm reloading for my 7mm and 7mm-08 I thought I would try my 30-30. I'm shooting a Win. Mod. 94 lever action. I like to shot 170gr factory rounds, so I thought I would try Hornady Flex-Tip bullets. What do you guys think? And do you have some good loads?

i have shot the flex tips threw a 444 and 450 and 45 lc have not tried them threw a 30-30 liked the results from the 3 guns i tested them in pretty good bullet. i only have one 30-30 and it is antique and worth around 1500 so i don't shoot it to much and would not shoot those new loads threw it. but i would give them a try in a heart beat with a diffrent gun.

I purchased a box of factory loads for my Marlin 336.  I had great accuracy just with the factory loads!!  I purchased the Hornady 160 grains only for I did not see a box of the 170 grains which I normally shoot.  I cant be of much help as to if the bullets shot any differently on paper save for the fact I had tighter groups.  The same day I went out with these new load I was re zeroing for I just replaced the scope on my Marlin.

And to all asking why would I put a scope on a .30-30 Win ...well I do, and it shots great with a scope!!  So leave me alone!!  8)

I'm currently reloading for my .223, next will be the .30-06 and the .30-30 will be after that (unless I do purchase a .325 WSM  :IBCOOL:) and the Flex Tip is what I'll be loading!!

I've loaded them and they didn't impress me.  The factory ammo doesn't impress me either.  But 31 grains of Ramshot Xterm worked OK.

Why not put a scope on a 30/30?  Some people put scopes on .22s.

I shoot the Winchester for tradition.  "Pointy" bullets just don't feel right, so I haven't tried them.

Why not put a scope on a 30/30?  Some people put scopes on .22s.

True!  Its just that everytime Someone sees my 30-30 with a scope or hears about it, they look at me and  :mor:  is just read in there eyes.  I've killed one deer with it, my brother has taken several, and my dad has been using that rifle since he was in his early 20's with a scope on it.  I have not a clue as too how may deer that rifle had killed.  Its a great weapon!!

I hunt with a muzzy now so open sight for me.  I learned with open sights and and had no issues going back to the open sight.

I would typically agree with you...but the flex-tip bullet is rubber and dose not put direct pressure on the primer to set it off.  There a safe bullet to use for a tubed magazine, heck they were made just for a tubed magazine.

Do they really perform all that much better out of a 30 30?

I've shot the Remington Core-Lock, Winchester Powder Point's, and the Hornady Flex-Tip.  The Flex-tip was the most accurate bullet at at 100 yds.  Next time I shot it, I'll take a pic of the target.  Not saying it'll work for everyone, but for MY rifle, with the bullets I've used, it had preformed the best.  I don't have a cyrno, but really courtios to see what the velocity is  :dunno:

I'd say they are worth a try.   :twocents:

I think you missed my point.  I said I like tradition.  Flex tip rubber bullets are not traditional "west" bullets.    Not saying they are better or worst, but why I haven't tried them.  If I want down range accuracy, I shoot my 25-06.

I too have shot the Remington, and Winchester.. Both have killed mega animals for me out of my Mod.94 ( no scope  :chuckle: ) but the sometimes jam in my doughters bolt action 30/30. She started shooting the flex tips, and her bolt works great, with no jamming wat so ever.. I've shot them out of my mod.94 and they shoot real well.. I've loaded the tube full and found NO primer dentings on any round.( I shot like a single shot keeping the tube full)

Good round, I will be reloading them for both the bolt, and lever action 30/30..
