45lb king caught at Pt. Defiance
« on: July 12, 2010, 12:58:45 PM »
A 45lb king was reportedly caught this week at Pt. Defiance, the fish was wild and had to be released. The pictures are being posted at the boathouse marina and possibly on Salmon University.

I heard this rumor a couple weeks ago. It was bs. I know Ron who used to work the ferry booth got one in the forties about five years ago so I guess it's a possibility. I'm real good friends with the checker down there, lll hear for sure whether it's true or not. Congrats to the person if it is, thaw a pig for down there. My biggest is 29.

There are soooooo many people that dont know the weight just by judging. A 30 pound fish in PT D area would look 50 to most of the fisherman there.
Besides, 45 pounds and released? Give me a break. Couldent it have been 43.76 pounds? LOL

I have got the same rumor and my buddy was fishing on the day in question. He did not see it, but talked to the guy who supposably caught this lunker. I too disbelieve it as I have caught fish in that range and it is VERY hard for people in our area to simply field judge fish. Probably a nice native shaped like a football that went 25-30. Pictures speak a thousand words (or 30 to 40 pounds).

I tend to agree, the Boathouse Marina ran the story. Most of the average 12-15lb fish turn out to be "20 lbers". I do know of two legitimate 40-plus fish, one from Dalco I saw weighed myself and another a lady caught last summer along Gig Harbor. A 15lb king can put up an incredible fight an leave one with a feeling of "the leviathan that got away" syndrome... :chuckle:

I would say also, I've never put a ton of informational value on the marina's reports, fish check's are a little more reliable.

yeah I think the majority of their reports are to bring more business.

Kind of like a 160 buck in Montana or Wyoming being a 180 here in Washington   :o

I haven't seen the pic but was it taken in the water? Can't remove wild fish from the water right? How would you judge it accurately? I've caught plenty of salmon big and (mostly) small and can't judge it in the water.

My buddy got a 42lb king at the Tulalip Bubble 3 or 4 years ago.  He was able to keep it and I can see if I can get a picture.  But Kings do exist that big in the sound.

Yes 40+ pounders do hit the bay every year..I have caught 2 in all my years fishing the bay..One was 43 and the other was 46. Both from the mouth of the Puyallup, on a meat line,, both weighed in at the boathouse..

Back in the 60's and early 70's 40 -50 pound kings were quite common..

And orca's too. My grandpa used to fish the point in a row boat in the '50's and got into a pod of orca's once, scared the piss out of him.
