Leupold 36 Year Old VX-II vs. New VX-I
« on: July 14, 2010, 06:10:21 PM »
I recently posted information about a rifle that I bought that had an approximately 20 year old Leupold VX-II 3x9x40 scope on it. I would like something a little bigger. I am looking at a Leupold VX-I 4x12x40. The VX-II and III are out of my price range. My question is: How does a 20 year old VX-II compare to a new VX-I? Thank you for the information!

The VXII is a great scope!  If you need it quick for this hunting season go ahead and get the VXI or a Nikon Prostaff is IMO a better scope for the same price point than a VXI or Rifleman.  But if you think you have time before the upcoming rifle season, send your VXII to Leupold!!  Ask for a refurb job and they will clean it up, take it apart and make sure everything is working as it should and they may even replace the glass if its not up to there current standards.  I don't know what the price to do this is now, but I sent one in 2 years ago and they were going to charge me $35 to do this.  But they discovered a torn seal and simply replace the scope at no cost, just the shipping which was $10.  So I got a brand new scope for ten buck...cant beat that deal!! :IBCOOL:

$35 for a refurb job....or $180+ for a new scope... ;)

If you do decide to have it refurb, let us all know what the current price is Please!

That is a good suggestion. THe cheapest I have found a VX-I 4x12x40 is 299 with free shipping. I would much rather have a VX-III 4.5x14x40. But they are more like 550. I will look into the refurb tomorrow and continue to save for the VX-III. Maybe next year at this time I will have one. I will let you know what I find out from Leupold about the refurb.

The 3-9x40 VX-II is a great scope and can be had for $299 plus about $8 for shipping:

http://www.midwayusa.com/eshoppingcart.exe/quickcat?SaleItemID=549804&quantity=1

It is basically the same as the old Vari X-III, which at one time sold new for up to around $450 for the 3.5-10x40.

I forgot you said you were wanting to go up to a 4-12x40. I really think if you're on a limited budget you'd be better off going with a 3-9x. If you need higher magnification, I think you really should be willing to spend the money and get it in at least a VX-II, or better yet the VX-III.

Seems like I make a lot of plugs for Cabela's on here...
Cabela's will be having there Great Fall Outdoor days coming up in Aug 21...ish, which is one of the biggest sales of the year.  For these two weekends they have many, many products on sale and 80% of that will be hunting incorporated items.  There normally a number of different scopes on ad including Leupold scopes.  Just a heads up.  You may want to check it out.  There web page should also have the sale price listed when the item is on ad.

If your 3x9 is 20 years old then its most likely a Varrix-II. A new VX-I is pretty much the same as the old Varrix-II.

I really, really, really don't like the old vari x scopes.  I have one that is a 3.5-10x40 vari xIII and IMO it is a piece of *censored*.  Compared to the new vxII's and vxIII's that I have now.     :twocents:

I just found out that the Leupold scope is not 20 years old, but 36 years old. I looked it up on the Leupold site. Now same question: Is a new VX-I of better quality than a 36 year old VX-II? Thoughts or suggestions?

You should try asking Leupold your question. Try this:
