Idaho elk/wolf

This could come in handy...
A nonresident deer or elk tag may be used on a black bear or mountain lion or gray wolf during the deer or elk season when the black bear, mountain lion or gray wolf season is open.
The addition of gray wolf to the nonresident deer tag is new for 2010. This will be the first year a nonresident elk tag would be valid for tagging a black bear, mountain lion or gray wolf.

So let me see if I understand this. If I have an deer tag or elk tag....or maybe both. And I really can't seem to find deer or elk to shoot but do see a wolf and or blackbear, I can fill my deer and or elk tag with the wolf and bear?
Save an Idaho Elk and burn your tag on a wolf....that sounds like a fair trade to me.

Just posted this in the other thread as well.
You would rather pay $417 for your wolf (cost of an elk tag) by punching your elk tag rather than paying $186 for a regular wolf tag??? Doesn't make any sense to me. Unless you just want to pay 224% of a regular wolf tag just to tag a wolf.

The question is are non resident hunters given the oppurtunity to just get a wolf tag. If not than this is a good option. If so than this is just like throwing money in the fire.

That's exactly what it is....an option for the hunter. If I'm in Idaho hunting and seeing a good number of elk and to chase...probably not the choice I would make. But if I'm seeing more wolves then elk and deer I will be coming home with a wolf and feel good about my decision.
Here's another question regarding this. If I have both a deer and elk tag.....can I fill both tags with wolves and come home with two wolves or is it a limit of one wolf.

Generally speaking, If I was elk hunting in wolf country I'd probably have the wolf tag in my pocket. Many folks arent like me though and might find themselves staring down the barrel at one and want a legal option of haveing a wolf rug on the wall. I called one in while hunting in montana, and I probably would have burned my elk tag on him and certainly my deer tag.

It's a nice option, but not one I would use. Elk tag $417, deer tag $309, wolf tag....rumors are it will be lowered this year for non-residents. It's already over the counter for Non-residents.

Super cool!
I have hunted Idaho and regularly called in wolves...the cow elk dont even talk anymore, just ringing the dinner bell! Anyway, I would have burned my tag in a heartbeat on a couple huge wolves we ran into. The cool thing with Idaho is you have the option with bear (and now wolf) to NOT purchase the $500 in extra out of state tags and still smoke a trophy if you happen to come across one. A $300 deer tag or $400 elk tag for a monster bear or wolf...THWAK!

I have my Idaho non-resident deer tag and I would not hesitate to shoot a wolf. I have shot my fair share of deer in my lifetime...the chance to legally shoot a wolf sounds like something I would not be able to pass up if the opportunity arises. Who knows, I may never have that opportunity again.
I'll be keeping my eyes peeled for one those good-for-nothing dogs this deer season!

I think its a great idea....especially from a wolf management perspective. More opportunities to thin the population.
