deer food/attractant
« on: July 20, 2010, 07:08:13 PM »
I use the red mineral blocks from the feed store and get lots of bucks pics through the spring and summer into August.  After that, the numbers of bucks on my camera drops way off, presumably because they no longer need the minerals for horn growth.

Question - has anyone had success with other products to keep them around into the season?  Last year I tried apples, but it only seemed to attract bears.

I get a little better results from the Trophy Rocks than the Trace Mineral Salt from the feed store.

Wild game feed blocks.  They consist of corn, grains, minerals and molasses.  I picked up a couple at a local Del's.

Deer and elk dont need the salt as food begins to dry up and horn growth and lactation ends. The lush green foods they were eating washes alot of nutients out of there system. If your looking for attractant for sept on, sweet mix, alfalfa, corn and apples, lots of it a sack of apples doesnt cut it.yeah your going to get bears in bear country, but thats part of it

Trophy rock from cabelas works great $15, Purina deer chow is very good and it's good for them and they like it $13 or the pressed blocks from same type of food $8.50, cracked corn wal-mart 40lb $7.50 (not all stores carry it), My brother gets me all the cracked corn I need but I have been trying wheat from him they seem to like it we'll see. where do you live? send me a PM I will hook you up with wheat and corn to try if your close.

purina is garbage if it gets wet and expensive! Go to a local , grain elevators. We get ours form the hooterites for .12 cents a lb. Sweet mix is 8.99 a 55lb bag and they love it!

Thanks all for the ideas - I may try several, figuring one ought to work.  Sure would be nice to keep some of the deer around.
