What colors do deer see?
« on: July 20, 2010, 09:38:15 PM »
These articles are very cool.  University testing revealed that deer have no UV filter in their eyes and that they see only two colors. Deer are essentially red-green color blind like some humans. Their color vision is limited to the short (blue) and middle (green) wavelength colors.

I'll have to read those in the morning after work. Everything I've seen or read over the years has said they're totally color blind and see only shades of gray. And that they can see IR and UV wavelengths of light. The claim has always been they can tell the difference between leaves-plants etc and modern clothes because they can see the UV light reflected off clothing that isn't reflected off plant matter. Most any animal that has enhanced night vision has some color blindness.

Speaking of deer I've seen 15 in the last two weeks....ON I5 North while exiting to 526/527, ON I405 in Bothell. In an Office Park in Kirkland...Westlake Sammamish in Redmond...I'm seeing more Deer (and coyotes) on Pavement than I have in the woods for several months... :dunno:

I've actually read many articles and other research data that all say the same thing.  I also think that WDFW prints a copy in blue for the deer so they know when hunting season opens up!!

Oh, they know; most of them turn into squirrels until deer season is over.   :chuckle:

I think the squirels get to be there eyes during hunting season.  They always seem to go off when your sitting there trying to watch for deer.  I don't know how many times I have thought about shooting those things with my deer rifle as they drop cones on you and make a ton of noise.
Cut em!
It's not the shells!  It's the shooter!

movement is what really gives you away. I've had several staredowns with deer and kept still, after about ten minutes they usually keep walking, even if they know something is up.

It was a summer time hike but I still got the drop on a balck bear because the chipmunks were chattering like mad at one digging into their stash..

I think WSU should provide a study devoted to "understanding chipmunk language"! anyone out there need a Theseus idea? I for one would be interested in reading that article   :). They biotch at me for being in the woods all the time, they must do it to all! I just need to learn how to distinguish who and what the are chattering about!

:jacked: Start your own tread about squirrels.  I wanted a serious discussion about the value of various camo and the whole UV issue but I guess that isn't going to happen.
